Broadcaster Press 05 July 17, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Alvis dedicated to music By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net For director of athletic bands and assistant professor Jonathan Alvis, last week was a busy – but fun – immersion on what he has made his life’s work: Music. From Sunday through Friday, the USD Department of Music hosted the 61st annual Upper Midwest Summer Music Camp. It was Alvis’ second year as camp coordinator. “It’s basically a week of dedicating their lives to nothing but music – learning about music and making music, and everything involved with that,” Alvis said. The students range in ages from those who just completed fifth grade through those who just completed their senior year in high school. Throughout the week, they have an opportunity to get involved in major ensembles, smaller ensembles, concert band, concert choir, jazz band, show choir and other activities. “Every kid (likes) something different,” Alvis said. “That’s one of the nice parts about camp, is that it’s not just one type of kid – we have kids from every different background, every type of band, and really I think in the end their favorite parts are getting to make music and getting to meet new friends.” Music has long been a part of Alvis’ life. “I come from a long line of trombonists,” he said. “My dad still plays the trombone, my mom played the trombone in band, her dad played, his dad played and his dad played. My mom still has my great-greatgrandfather’s trombone.” Although Alvis began “really, truly playing” trombone when he was in the fifth grade, there is evidence he had the urge to do so long before. Railroad crossings to be upgraded near Lesterville and Tripp Two railroad crossings over state highways are set to be upgraded over the next few weeks near Lesterville and Tripp, according to the South Dakota Department of Transportation. Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railroad crews are scheduled to upgrade the crossing on state Highway 46 northwest of Lesterville beginning Monday, July 16, and upgrade the crossing on Highway 18 beginning Monday, July 23. The crossing surface will be removed and replaced with new concrete planks; it will take five days to complete each one. Highway 46 traffic will be detoured around the work onto Menno Road – a Yankton-Bon Homme County road two miles north of Highway 46 and east of Highway 25. Highway 18 traffic will be detoured on the county road just east of the crossing. Traffic will travel north two miles and west one mile to Highway 37. For more information, contact Ron Peterson or Rod Gall with the Department of Transportation at (605) 668-2929. Complete road construction information can be found on www.safetravelusa.com/sd/ or by dialing 511. Spotlight On “I have a picture of myself when I was there (where) my dad is holding the trombone and I’m playing,” he said. The Athens, WV, native went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in music education from Concord University, and his Master of Music in Trombone Performance, as well as a Doctor of Music Arts in Trombone Performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Despite his background, Alvis said he never attended a camp such as the one he coordinated last week. “I never really knew what one was until I started working for the one at UNCG,” he said. “I really wish I would have gone to one.” This is one of the reasons he hopes to give each of the students as memorable an experience as possible. “The kids already have a love of music, obviously, or they wouldn’t be here,” Alvis said. “But I would love for them to want to go home and spread that love, share that with their DAKOTA SENIOR MEALS Served at the Main Street Center and Town Square, “Meals on Wheels.” Please call before 9 a.m. to schedule or cancel a meal at 624-7868.
