04 Broadcaster Press July 24, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Miller gearing up for fall at USD’s Barnes & Noble By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net If USD students have a question about textbooks, Angela Miller is one of their go-to experts. For the past six years, Miller has served as store manager to the Barnes & Noble College Booksellers on the USD campus. “First and foremost, it’s really about being there for the student, making sure we have the correct books here on our shelves for the start of the semesters,” she said. “We also have the great selection of Coyote clothing, gifts, trade books and school supplies – so it’s more than just a textbook store.” Miller also helps to oversee the activities of the student workers and encourage them to grow both as employees and students, she said. “During the course of the school year, there’s about 10-15 (employees), but at the start of each semester we employ about 20-25 students,” she said. When there are more employees, there also are more customers. “At the beginning of each semester … we have the most sales,” Miller said. “Textbooks do cost more than a T-shirt does, so on average we do about 70 percent of our business during the start of the semesters.” Summer is more relaxed, but there still are things that need to get done. “Right now we’re gearing up for the fall term, for school, for football season, volleyball season, things like that,” Miller said. “That’s a lot of work to do to get all those books on the shelves.” How many books, exactly? Miller is unsure as to how many copies of each book are sold, but by the time the fall semester arrives, approximately 1,600 titles are on the shelves in various quantities. One of Miller’s favorite parts of her job is the Bestseller Program, which trains student employees Spotlight On the ins and outs of becoming a store manager after they graduate. Several USD students have completed this program, including one who is now assistant manager of the bookstore at Augustana College, and another who works at Mount Mary College near Milwaukee. “That is one of the satisfying things I have with my job,” Miller said. “When we place these students at another store, I get to stay in contact with them for years and years, because I was their store manager, and now we’re peers because they’re a store manager, as well.” Miller has worked at Barnes & Noble since it arrived on campus in 2002, and was employed at the bookstore prior to that, as well. A self-described Army brat/Army wife, Miller came to Vermillion with her family in September 2000 when her husband became an ROTC instructor. “When he retired we stayed here,” she said. “We love the community, I love my job, I love being able to help students. It’s a great place to be able to raise a family.” 4-H State Fair information on iGrow Each year more than 9,000 South Dakota youth actively participate in 4-H programming. The South Dakota State Fair is an annual event where many of these youth celebrate what they’ve learned throughout the year and compete with other 4-H members from across the state through display exhibits, livestock exhibits, and judging and speaking contests. The 2012 South Dakota State Fair is held in Huron Aug. 30-Sept. 3. This year, as South Dakota 4-H members and volunteers prepare for the big event, they will have 24-7 access to 2012 South Dakota State Fair information thanks to SDSU Extension’s iGrow.org Web site. “Making State Fair resources available on iGrow is an important step in achieving our goal to make information and forms accessible quickly and conveniently,” said Peter Nielson, 4-H Youth Development Program Director. In 2011, more than 5,000 4-H members were responsible for 14,319 entries. Not a simple task explains Nielson, as each entry has to pass a qualification process in order to compete at the state fair. Projects are key to the hands-on learning model 4-H has embraced since the organizations beginning in 1902. As youths engage in developing skills in a variety of areas from livestock judging and food and family to Robotics and Videography/Photograph y; their projects need to meet certain criteria to qualify for fair entry.
