04 Broadcaster Press August 7, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Buckman ready for Clay County Fair By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net It’s that time of year again – August is here, which means the Clay County Fair will soon draw visitors to Vermillion with its exhibits, activities and vendors. This year the fair will take place Aug. 9-11, with entry and registration beginning Aug. 8. “It usually takes all year to get everything planned,” said Alison Buckman, member of the Clay County Fair Board. “A lot of it happens in the last month or so, but it takes all year to get a lot of it done. It’s going pretty good. There are just a lot of last-minute things that you can’t do until the end. We’ll be ready.” Buckman, a creative services print media specialist with the University of South Dakota, said that while the core focus of the fair does not change much from year to year, there usually are different activities offered to keep things new. “We have some pretty good classics that we try to keep around, like our demolition derby. People kind of flock to that,” she said. A new attraction this year takes place Friday and Saturday nights, respectively. “We have the inflatables that we do during the day for families and kids, and then at night we’ve added a kid and teen night,” Buckman said. “During the day it’ll be open to everyone, and then … (Friday) night it’ll be a middle school night and (Saturday) will be a high school night.” The inflatables will be open to the middle- and high-schoolers from 9-11 p.m. each night. “I think it’s going to go over really well,” Buckman said. Other popular events include the free skid loader rodeo, the demolition derby and the ATV mud races, which take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m., respectively. These larger events usually draw approximately 2,000-3,000 people, and several thousand more attend throughout the day, Buckman said. “We really like seeing people come and enjoy the fair,” she said. “It’s a good thing.” Buckman said she has been around the fair since she was a little girl, as her parents and siblings were all involved in 4-H. “My dad has been on the fair board for more than 40 years, so when I moved into town I decided that was probably something that I wanted to be involved in,” she said. “I was the fair manager for about seven years. Now I’m just on the fair board and help as much as I can.” The fair would not be what it is without all the hard work put in by all the members of the board, she said. “A lot of our board members have been on there 20-plus years or 30 years, so we’ve had a lot of experience,” Buckman said.
