Let Laura Jones serve
you the ‘eye opener’
By Travis Gulbrandson
travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net
There’s a new face in
the Neuharth Café at the
Al Neuharth Media
Center.
Laura Jones has taken
over for Julie Madden in
serving USD students,
faculty and staff in need
of a caffeine boost.
Jones has worked for
Aramark for the past nine
years, but has only been
manning the café since
the beginning of the fall
semester.
But that doesn’t mean
she’s new to the coffee
game.
“I was trained on
coffee in 2005, so I’ve
been doing it for seven
years now,” she said.
“(The training) is just
how to make drinks, how
many of shots go into a
mocha, for example –
basic coffee shop stuff.”
Jones’ regular day
begins when she reports
for work at 7 a.m.
“I start by turning on
the espresso machine,
and then brew all the
different roasts for the
day,” she explained.
There are six different
roasts available each day,
out of a choice of nine.
“There are monthly
roasts, but we only brew
fair trade and rainforestfriendly eco-ground
brews,” Jones said.
“People start coming in
around 7:45. We open at
7:30.”
Customers keep
passing through until
closing time, she said.
“It’s really sporadic – I
haven’t been able to
figure out when they all
come,” she said.

“Sometimes it’s
between classes,
sometimes it’s during
when a normal class
period is, so I don’t really
quite understand it.”
On an average day,
Jones said she serves
between 75 and 100
customers.
For those who aren’t
interested in coffee, the
Neuharth Café also serves
tea, Italian sodas,
smoothies and hot
chocolate, as well as food
items.
Jones said the biggest
sellers are brewed coffees
and white mochas.
Her own favorite item
on the menu is “the eyeopener.”
“It’s a shot of espresso
Time for influenza vaccination
Although it’s only
September, influenza has
been detected in South
Dakota, prompting a state
health official to urge
universal vaccination.
“We have already
reported four confirmed
cases of influenza, all
children,” said Dr. Lon
Kightlinger, state
epidemiologist for the
department. ”Fortunately
the vaccine is readily
available this year and now
is a good time to be
vaccinated.”
Kightlinger noted that
51.1 percent of South
Dakotans over the age of 6
months were vaccinated
against the flu during the
2011-2012 season, the
highest rate in the nation.
Annual flu vaccination
is recommended for
everyone, but some groups
are at higher risk for
complications – pregnant
women, people over 50
years and people with
chronic medical
conditions. Health-care
workers and household
contacts of high risk
populations such as those
with young infants in the
household should
especially be vaccinated.
Kightlinger encouraged
parents to take advantage
of the free flu vaccine the
state offers for kids from
six months to 18 years.
Kids account for a
significant number of flu
cases and hospitalizations
each year and also help
spread the illness in the
community. Vaccinating
children protects them and
the people around them.
South Dakotans can
also prevent the spread of
the flu by practicing the
common sense measures of
the department’s “Stopping
the flu starts with you”
campaign:
Wash your hands often
with soap and water or use
alcohol-based hand gel if
you can’t wash;
Cover your mouth
when you cough or sneeze;
Don’t touch your eyes,
nose or mouth;
Stay home if you’re sick.
Influenza is a viral
respiratory illness marked
by the sudden onset of
fever, headache, extreme
tiredness, dry cough, sore
throat, runny or stuffy
nose and muscle aches. It
spreads when an infected
person coughs, sneezes or
talks, sending the highly
contagious virus into the
air. Learn more at

and black coffee,” she
said. “(I like them) right
away in the morning. I
can not function without
it. I’m very foggy in the
morning.”
A native of Wayne, NE,
Jones said she has two
favorite aspects of her
job.
The first is actually
making the different
varieties of coffee drinks.
The second is a simple,
two-word answer.
“Free coffee,” she said
with a laugh.
