One in a VerMillion
Meet Wendy Johnson
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
Many people in the
Vermillion community
credit the success of the
local soccer programs to the
efforts of scores of
volunteers.
Wendy Johnson is
among that group, having
served as president of the
local Youth Soccer League
for three years.
Wendy, who serves as
assistant director at the USD
Wellness Center, and her
husband, Andy, who farms
near Vermillion, are the
parents of three kids, Riley,
12, Lilly, 10 and Carley, 7.
“I’m the president of the
Vermillion Youth Soccer
League, and it’s all a
volunteer thing. For the last
seven or eight years, I’ve
been involved on the soccer
board, and for the last two
years, I’ve been serving as
president,” she said.
She became involved
with the soccer league about
seven years ago, when those
kids were much younger.
“My kids were all little at
the time, and someone
approached me and asked if
I would volunteer my time
… to be honest, that’s how I
got started. I think it’s a
great sport, but it’s not
anything that I played at the
collegiate level or even in
high school,” she said.
Before serving as
president, Wendy was
equipment coordinator for
the youth soccer league, and
put in a stint as the
organization’s treasurer.
“When my term as
president is up, I’ll be
moving into the pastpresident position, and then
I may cycle on and stay on
as something else,” she said.
“I’m totally involved with
the league from an
administrative standpoint
… and a lot of us on the
board volunteer our time in
certain ways.”
Pat Cross will step in as
the league’s president when
her term ends.
She is happy to see youth
soccer programs continue to
grow in Vermillion, topped
off by the Vermillion High
School boys’ soccer team
clinching the State A
championship Oct. 13.
“It’s an exciting time for
soccer, and one thing that is
important to us is that we
hope one day Vermillion
sanctions soccer as a high
school sport,” Wendy said.
“Keeping kids involved and
being active through any
extra-curricular activities
are very monumental in
their lives.”
“All of our youth
programs and all of our
club programs that we run
feed right into the high
school. That is our mission
… to make soccer an
opportunity at all levels in
Vermillion and in
surrounding communities,
and it’s starting to show,” she
said. “We are playing soccer
at a high level, and that’s
exciting.”
The Johnsons’ daughter,
Lilly, in involved in youth
soccer, and Wendy hopes
she will continue to have
opportunities to play the
sport as she grows older.
“Possibly, if they don’t
sanction soccer here, and
everybody else sanctions in
the state, at some point
there may not be an
opportunity to play soccer
because there won’t be any
teams to play against,”
Wendy said. “As that process
goes forward over the next
five years, it’s very important
to work with the
community and the school
board to show why it’s
important to sanction.”
Red Cross plans Holiday
Mail for Heroes
Each year the American Red
Cross provides assistance to more
than 2 million service members
and many of our nation’s 24
million veterans.
The cards and personal
messages, sent by tens of
thousands of Americans, provide
a welcome “touch of home” for
our troops during the holiday
season.
Each year cards are collected
between October and early
December and distributed at
military installations, veteran’s
hospitals and in other locations.
There are several ways to be
part of the Holiday Mail for
Heroes program. In addition to
sending cards on your own, you
may want to start making plans
to host card signing parties or
card making parties. Every card
received will be screened for
hazardous materials by Pitney
Bowes and then reviewed by Red
Cross volunteers working around
the country.
Please observe the following
guidelines to ensure a quick
reviewing process: Ensure that
all cards are signed; Use generic
salutations such as “Dear Service
Member.” Cards addressed to
specific individuals cannot be
delivered through this program;
Only cards are being accepted. Do
not send or include letters;
Do not include email or home
addresses on the cards: the
program is not meant to foster
pen pal relationships; Do not
include inserts of any kind,
including photos: these items will
be removed during the reviewing
process; Please refrain from
choosing cards with glitter or
using loose glitter as it can
aggravate health issues of ill and
injured warriors;
If you are
mailing a large quantity of cards,
please bundle them and place
them in large mailing envelopes
or flat rate postal shipping boxes.
