USD For Miami Of
Ohio
For the second time
in three years, the University of South Dakota
will be in the market for
a new athletic director.
Sources told the Yankton Press & Dakotan
that USD athletic director David Sayler will be
named to the same
position at Miami University of Ohio at a
press
conference
Wednesday afternoon in
Oxford, Ohio.
Sayler, 43, follows former USD athletic director Joel Nielsen, who
left in March 2010 for

Draper hired as new
fire chief
The City of Vermillion
has announced the hiring of Richard Shannon
Draper as the city’s new
fire chief.
Draper’s career spans
more than 25 years, during which time he
served a wide variety of
departments, from volunteer to military to
public, in a host of
places including Pennsylvania, Kosovo and
Hungary. Most recently,
he lectured in South
Korea about advanced
leadership skills for fire
service chief officers.
His most recent experience with a career fire
department was in Missouri.
Draper replaces Fire
Chief Doug Brunick,
who retired in June after
more than 30 years of
service. To find a
replacement for him, the
city embarked upon a
national search for a
new chief, reviewing
applications and conducting a series of
phone and in-person
interviews, eventually
narrowing the pool
down to three applicants.
Standoff in Vermillion has tragic end
A domestic altercation in Vermillion that
began in the early
morning hour s of
Christmas day ended
tragically.
A Vermillion man is
dead and his two children are safe after a
standoff that began at
approximately 1 a.m.
Tuesday.
The man apparently
died of a self-inflicted
gunshot after keeping
local law enforcement
at bay for approximately 12 hours.
Vermillion residents braved the cold for the fourth annual Parade of Lights, which traveled down Main Street past Ratingen Platz on Dec. 7. More
than a dozen floats were featured in the parade, the theme of which was “The Spirit of Christmas.” The parade concluded with the arrival of Santa
and Mrs. Claus and the lighting of the Community Christmas Tree. Following the parade, Mr. and Mrs. Claus met with their young admirers in the
basement of the Clay County Courthouse. (Photo by Travis Gulbrandson)
