06 Broadcaster Press May 21, 2013 www.broadcasteronline.com One in a VerMillion Meet Fern Kaufman By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Fern Kaufman’s years of service to not only the Vermillion community but also the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board of Directors were recognized May 15. Fern was presented the Community Health Service Award at the Dakota Hospital Foundation Community Leadership Dinner held that evening at the Muenster University Center on the USD campus. Fern and her husband Chuck, and their two young sons moved to Vermillion in 1960, and moved to Bloomington, IN, where Chuck attended Indiana University. The family returned to Vermillion two years later, and the Kaufmans have lived in Vermillion ever since. Fern has an English degree from Huron College and a master’s degree in English from USD. She taught English at Elk Point High School, was children’s librarian at the Vermillion Public Library for two years, and served as acting library director for six months. She was owner and operator of an office supply and book store called The Index for 19 years. Fern was elected to the Vermillion School Board in 1973, and served 20 on the board and also several terms on the Associated School Board of South Dakota. After completing her work on those two boards, she began her service on the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board, serving from 1992 to 2003 and again briefly in 2006-2007. She was president of the Dakota Hospital Foundation from 1998 to 2000. During that time, the Care Center was completely remodeled, and Dakota Gardens, the senior living congregate housing apartments, were added to the Sanford Vermillion facilities. Fern’s mother developed Alzheimer’s Disease, and when she could no longer care for herself, Fern and her sister, Marilyn Abraham, decided to bring her to Vermillion to the Alzheimer’s Unit at the Care Center. A few years after her mother passed away, Fern’s sister was contacted by the area Alzheimer’s Association asking if she and Fern would consider starting an Alzheimer’s Caregiver Support Group in Vermillion. Fern and Marilyn have been facilitating that group for five years. Fern remains active in the United Church of Christ – Congregational, PEO Chapter E, USD faculty women’s book group, Vermillion Public Library Board, and the Vermillion Area Community Foundation Board. Established by the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board of Directors in 2001, the Community Health Service Award recognizes outstanding contributions of time, talent and resources benefiting the health of the community. Recipients are selected by the Dakota Hospital Foundation Board for their significant lifetime dedication or unique, noteworthy contributions to community health services. Home For Sale!
