“The Line To Power”
Meet David Hulac
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
A familiar face will be
seen among dozens of
characters at the Vermillion
High School Performing Arts
Center when “Robin Hood:
Spirit of Greene” is presented
for a four-day run on July 19.
David Hulac may not
predominately take center
stage during this year’s
Vermillion Community
Theatre (VCT) production,
but providing a supporting
role is something he’s more
than familiar with.
In the VCT’s 2012
production of “Annie,” David
portrayed Oliver “Daddy”
Warbucks, going so far as
shaving his head to better
resemble the character.
In “My Fair Lady,”
presented in 2011, he played
Professor Henry Higgins, the
phoneticist who takes on the
task of completing a vast
makeover of Eliza Doolittle’s
speech, manners and dress.
In 2010, David took on
the supporting character of
Jud Fry in the musical
“Oklahoma!”
This week, he portrays
“the bad guy” he said, not the
lead role in “Robin Hood:
Spirit of Greene.”
“I’m the one who decides
that everyone needs new
taxes, and I’m the one who
decides that Robin Hood
needs to be arrested,” David
said.
He believes his attraction
to the stage can be traced
back to when he was a 7year-old, and saw two
productions in his church –
“Godspell,” and “MASS” by
Leonard Bernstein.
“That experience really
captured by imagination. I
didn’t realize how much fun
they could be, but just
watching those was so
amazing,” he said. “One of
the things about being a little
kid is you’re able to
remember everybody’s parts
and everybody’s songs, and
you get so involved in the
story. And, that’s really never

gone away.
“Theatre brings together
lots of fun things together for
me,” David said. “It’s really
challenging to remember
your lines, remember your
blocking. It’s fun to make
new relationships all the
time. I’m never very good
with choreography, but for
me it’s fun to try to
remember how my feet go
and how to work with other
people, and those sorts of
things.”
David remembers feeling
devastated after the last
performance of “My Fair
Lady” in 2011.
“I couldn’t figure out why,
but I later read something in
a meditation that when a
show’s run ends, it is like a
death, because all of these
people, all of these parts that
were working to create this
one artifact, this one show,
are gone, “ he said. “When
our bodies die, our
molecules are still there, but
they sort of go off to create
something else, and you can
never bring them back
together to create that one
thing.
“The soul may be gone,
but being part of creating
that thing that is bigger than
all of us together, creating
that synergy, is magical. And
now, my daughter plays
Marian,” David said,
pointing to the stage during
rehearsal, “and my other two
kids are apothecary kids, and
it’s fun to have the whole
family be a part of it, and to
watch it all happening again.”
David, a professor of
psychology at the University
of South Dakota, is used to
lecturing before classrooms
of students, and believes
theatre performance is just
another way of
communicating to large
groups of people.
“But I almost wonder … I
would do this show if there
was an audience of two,
because it’s so fun for me,” he
said. “Now, we get a lot of
energy from the audience,
and every audience is
different, and that creates a
different artifact every night.
“But this really is a
different way of
communicating a truth that I
can’t do when I lecture, that I
can’t do when I write – those
are very worthwhile and fun
things to do, also, but I really
think theatre helps you
communicate that sense of
truth.”
