Meet Brian Adams
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
Local actresses and
actors created a host of
characters – ranging from
Robin Hood and Maid
Marian to Friar Tuck and
the Sheriff of Nottingham
– on the stage of the
Vermillion High School
Performing Arts Center
last weekend.
The cast of characters
of “Robin Hood: Spirit of
the Greene,” were front
and center as the
Vermillion Community
Theatre continued its
tradition of producing
highly professional and
entertaining summer
theatrical works.
In the background is a
whole other cast just as
important as the people
who take the stage. They
do everything from
making sure the lights
and sound are working
properly to moving set
pieces between scenes
during the performance.
One of the people in
the shadows backstage
last weekend is Brian
Adams, a local man who,
for years now, has
designed and helped
create the sets that
provide a highly realistic
stage atmosphere for the
actors.
“I do some of the set
design, and I’m also the
technical director, which
means I’m in charge of
building it,” Brian said
during an intermission of
a dress rehearsal held at
the arts center last
Thursday. “This is the
sixth year that I’ve
worked with these guys
(at the community
theatre) although this
year was a little different
in that I wasn’t in charge
of painting the set.
“I was gone to two
weeks to Colorado for
work, so one of the other
people of the cast painted
it for me, which was
nice,” he said. “But I was
responsible for designing
and building it.”
Audience members
who attended “Robin
Hood: Spirit of the
Greene” couldn’t help but
feel they were in
Sherwood Forest. The set
contained rolling hills,
caves in which characters
could either exit or hide,
and – to provide an extra
bit of realism – actual
trees complete with
leaves.
“This isn’t the first
time we’ve had real plants
on stage. I was thinking
about what would be the
best way to make trees on
stage,” he said. “We could
spend days and days
building some and trying
to make them look real,
or we could just go get
some trees. It took us
about two hours to cut
the trees down, and
another two hours to put
them up. That’s no time
at all – it was fast and
easy and it looked really
good when the work was
all done.”
Brian studied scene
design while a student at
the University of South
Dakota. Today, he works
at South Dakota Public
Broadcasting as a
communications
maintenance technician.
The Vermillion
Community Theatre has
provided a venue for him
to put his knowledge and
natural mechanical ability
to work.
“Since I’ve been doing
this for this theatrical
company for six years
now, I know the space
and I know the people,”
Brian said. “I know what
we’re capable of building,
and what we’re capable of
moving, and I think that
helps a bit, too.
“I enjoy building
things and creating
things, and doing theatre
is fun,” he said. “This is
the one ‘big’ time every
year that I actually do this
kind of stuff, so it’s nice.”
