Weekend Masses: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Meet Krista Scholten By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Krista Scholten only has a couple month’s experience under her belt as the market educator at the Vermillion Area Farmers Market, held every Thursday at the Clay County Fairgrounds, and every Saturday at the Ratigan Platz in downtown Vermillion. In that time, she’s learned one thing for certain. She has a fun job. “This is the first time I’ve done it; I started when the summer market started this year, so it’s a new experience for me,” Krista said. “It’s been a very fun activity, and basically what we try to do is present something educational that has some ties to what we’re doing at the Farmers Market, so it can be about gardening, or about different recipes that might utilize fresh produce or locallysourced produce.” At the start of her new role at the market, she envisioned perhaps giving presentations similar to small lectures about a variety of topics. “That’s certainly not how it works because people move through as they are walking through the market,” Krista said. “What I do is basically have information available for the people, and usually a short spiel to present if anyone has any questions. Something similar to a lecture doesn’t’ work well at all, because people are in motion; they’re going to different vendors.” Krista, who has experience as a classroom teacher, hadn’t used her skills as an educator at a farmer’s market until this summer. “I’ve been going to the farmer’s market for a few years, and I saw an advertisement for the position,” she said, “so I contacted the market, told them I was a fan, and wanted to try to be involved a little bit more. “I’m not a farmer ERMILLION V myself. I’m not a vendor. But I’ve always thought this (market) is a nice community of people,” Krista said, “and I think what they’re doing is fun, important and hard work, so I just thought it would be fun to do this.” Krista already has activities planned for the next several weeks. “There’s a lot of fun things going on,” she said. “On Aug. 1, we’re having ‘the dog days of summer,’ and we’ll have free doggy snacks and a very dogfriendly market.” There will be no Farmers Market education on Aug. 8, as the Clay County Fair will be underway at that time. Krista has planned an “Iron Chef ” competition at the Farmers Market on Aug. 15. “That’s going to be really fun because we’re going to get a few chefs from Hy-Vee, from Valiant Vineyards, and hopefully from RED (Steakhouse) and from Café Brulé, too,” she said. “We’re planning to have some combination of chefs, and they’re going to try to utilize the market on the spot. “That will be really great for people to come and watch. It will be fun, and it will be done usually around 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. We like to start just a little bit later so people who, after they get off work can wander in (to the market) and see what we’re doing,” Krista said. Last week’s education program at the Vermillion Farmer’s Market dealt with the topic of juicing, and how to utilize homegrown vegetables to make a variety of tasty juice drinks. Future programs will include presentations on how to make your own bacon, and how to brew your own beer. “If you come here on Thursdays, we usually always have something interesting going on,” Krista said.
