Meet
Andrew
Homan
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
Andrew Homan has
barely had a chance to get
to know his players, and,
in turn, his players are
just starting to get to
know him.
This time of getting
acquainted while
preparing for the 2013
Vermillion Tanager
football season is an
experience that Andrew
successfully sought, and is
greatly enjoying.
Last spring, shortly
after Gary Culver decided
to end his 36-year career
as the Vermillion High
School head football
coach, Andrew saw the
job advertised in a local
newspaper.
“I saw that they had
the head football
(coaching position) open,
and I know what kind of
tradition they have here
in Vermillion … there are
people I know here who
told me how well the
program was and the rich
tradition,” Andrew said,
“so I thought I might as
well apply and see what
happens.”
Andrew played high
school football at Battle
Creek–Ida Grove High
School in Ida Grove, IA.
He played college football
for the University of
South Dakota and for
Morningside College,
until injuries forced him
to stop playing. While a
competitor, he played at
various positions,
including full back, tight
end and linebacker.
Andrew has a
bachelor’s degree in
physical education and
sports science from
Morningside, and will
teach physical education
and social science courses
in the Vermillion School
District. He brings nine
years of coaching and
strength conditioning
experience to his new
coaching job.
He has served as head
football coach at Sloan,
IA, and as an assistant
coach at Lawton-Bronson
School District in
Lawton, IA.
While at Sloan, “I got
some experience and
learned some things that I

want to do, and don’t
want to do, and coaching
at Lawton-Bronson with
Coach (Chad) Moseman,
who is a heck of a head
coach, really taught me a
lot of things that I can
take with me now and
continue on as we
progress,” Andrew said.
The Tanager team held
its first “pre-regular”
practice on Aug. 15 at the
outdoor field near VHS.
“I’ve had a lot of these
kids for two weeks –
they’ve been lifting and
running, and they’ve been
getting after it pretty well;
we’ve had great
attendance,” he said.
Andrew said his
coaching philosophy
stresses five pillars:
Family, Character, Pride,
Purpose and Attitude.
“We feel that with
those five things, if we
can grow on those every
week, and keep adding on
to those, I think we’re
going to lay a good
foundation this season,”
he said. “We’ll see how
well the season goes and
build on from there and
for years to come.”
