Weekend Masses: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Meet Mike Myers By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Mike Myers was around friends and acquaintances when he briefly and with a bit of humor addressed the audience at the Clay County Democrats’ fundraising dinner Aug. 22 at Howler’s in Vermillion. “Dennis is a nice guy, but he’s a caretaker governor,” Mike said of South Dakota’s incumbent governor, Dennis Daugaard. “When I’m the governor, we’re going to have push-ups in the morning, and dancing at night.” Mike, a former University of South Dakota law professor known for his expertise on matters of health care, elder care, and physical fitness, announced earlier this month that he plans to run for governor as an independent candidate. Mike taught health care law and elder law at USD for 23 years. He also served as the chief executive officer of MayoSt. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, MN, and as an executive with other hospitals. At Thursday’s event in Vermillion, his comments were largely light-hearted as he talked about his “Elder Care” radio show and his support for industrialized hemp. In earlier news reports this month, however, he has said that health care and criticism of "corporate medicine" will be the crux of his campaign. He has been an outspoken critic of the vertically integrated health systems reflected by Sanford Health and Avera McKennan, which he called “oligopolies.” And he said that health care and criticism of “corporate medicine” will be the crux of his campaign. He said he’s running as an independent because both political parties are captives to corporate interests. “We’ve got career politicians that are basically controlled by the lobbies,” he said. As an independent candidate, Mike would need to collect 3,171 signatures of registered voters to qualify for the ballot. He is the first candidate to enter the race, but Gov. Daugaard is expected to seek a second term. Mike, 77, grew up in northern Sioux Falls. He graduated from Cathedral High School in 1954, served in the Navy and then returned home, graduating from South Dakota State University.
