Natasha Gault and her
eighth grade science
students at Vermillion
Middle School have been
named the state winner in
the 2014 Samsung Solve for
Tomorrow contest. Their
topic, Asian Carp Invasion,
was chosen for its
innovative approach to
advancing interest in STEM
among the students as well
as making an impact in the
community.
Since they have been
chosen as a state winner,
the eighth-graders have
already earned a minimum
of $20,000 in Samsung
technology for Vermillion
Middle School.
The students will now
go on to represent South
Dakota in the national
competition where they
will create a two- to threeminute video that brings
their lesson plan to life. For
their efforts, they will have
the opportunity to earn a
larger technology package
of $35,000 or $140,000 and
a chance to come and
present their story with
other competing schools in
March. If VMS is chosen as
one of the five national
winners, they will also be
invited to attend an awards
ceremony in Washington,
DC in April.
Congratulations to
Gault and her eighthgraders on being named
state winners.
