relevant teaching message
from LifeChurch.tv?s senior
pastor, Craig Groeschel, via

Couple shares faith in ag future
By Randy Dockendorf
randy.dockendorf@yankton.net
James Miiller and Carol
Sorensen both come from
farm families, sharing a
strong belief in
agriculture’s future.
Miiller and Sorensen,
both 41, are boyfriend and
girlfriend who attended
Tuesday’s opening day of
the Dakota Farm Show at
the DakotaDome. Miiller
farms west of Ethan, while
Sorensen’s father and
brother farm south of
Vermillion.
While one year does
not an operation make,
Miiller emphasized the
giant lift enjoyed by
farming last year. He
pointed to the timely rains
that led to high yields,
particularly for corn.
“I have optimism, since
we had such a good year
in 2013,” he said. “2012
was such a disaster
(because of drought), but
2013 had great crops and
good cattle prices.”
Sorensen agreed,
noting that southeast
South Dakota and
northeast Nebraska had
suffered back-to-back
years of 2011 flooding and
2012 exceptional drought.
“This past year was so
much better,” she said.
“Some farmers had sold
cattle because they didn’t
have the crops to feed
livestock. Now, they’re
buying back cattle, and it’s
so expensive.”
Despite the challenges
of recent years, Miiller
and Sorensen say their
families and friends share
the couple’s belief in the
future of farming.
“I’m a third-generation
farm, and my son is a
fourth-generation
farmer,” Miiller said. “We
raise beef cattle and crops,
and we have a few
chickens.”
Miiller, a widower,
represents a generational
link to maintaining the
family farm.
“My father is semiretired farmer, and he
helps out with the farming
operation,” he said. “I run
the farm and have two
sons who are 18 and 16
(years old). My older son
is attending MTI (Mitchell
Technical Institute) and
helping on the farm while
he goes to school.”
Sorensen has pursued a
nursing career. However, a
sibling has guaranteed the
farm – which consists of
crops and livestock – will
remain in the family.
“My brother is 39, and
he is a third-generation
farmer. Now, his boys are
following in his footsteps,”
she said. “They keep the
farm going.”
But that’s not always
the case, Sorensen said.
“There isn’t always a
family member to take
over the farm,” she noted.
“You always hope that one
of the children will keep
the farm going. You don’t
want to give up the land.”
Sometimes, Mother
Nature delivers a gutwrenching blow that sends
producers reeling and
threatens their existence.
Miiller said his late
wife’s father has friends
living in the Hot Springs
area of southwestern
South Dakota. Those
ranchers first suffered
from drought. Then, they
lost much of their herds
during last October’s
historic blizzards that
dumped four to five feet
of snow on western South
Dakota and claimed
thousands of cattle.
Still, farmers and
ranchers haven’t given up
hope, Miiller said.
“My friends and
neighbors run diversified
operations, and they are
optimistic about the
future of farming,” he
said.
He points to the higher
corn and soybean prices
in recent years. In
particular, he noted that
he has seen rising corn
prices because of the
ethanol plant in Davison
County, near Mitchell.
“Ethanol has really
made corn prices go up in
our area,” he said, adding
that the by-product of
distillers’ grain is used for
livestock feed.
Miiller said the
inability to pass a federal
farm bill hasn’t greatly
affected his 800-acre
operation. Whatever form
the farm bill takes, he sees
an increased emphasis on
crop insurance rather
than the government’s

producers.
Miiller holds another
reason for remaining
optimistic about
agriculture’s future. He
pointed to his son and
other young people who
are pursuing ag-related
education in order to
return to the farm or to
enter agri-business.
“My son’s class (at
MTI) has West River
students who want to
major in agriculture and
go back to work on their
ranch,” he said. “They
have programs with more
than 60 students,
compared to when I
attended 20 years ago and
had only eight students in
some of my classes. But
we were also coming off
the farm crisis of the
1980s. Things are a lot
better now.”
MTI has relocated to a
campus on the southern
edge of Mitchell and has
even built a housing
complex to accommodate

students, Miiller said.
“My son received a call,
asking if he was sure that
he would be attending the
school because there was a
waiting list in his
program,” he said.
Sorensen noted that
students in ag-related
fields are finding jobs,
which fuels interest in the
farm and ranch sector.
Miiller sees more
young people, including
young families, staying or
returning to rural areas
because of the quality of
life and opportunities.
The growing world
demand for U.S. food
products should fuel
production, Miiller said.
He pointed to foreign
trade deals for American
corn and soybeans, along
with a growing foreign
demand for U.S. meat and
other protein.
“Everyone needs to eat,
and we can adjust the
product,” he said.
