CHRIST OUR SAVIOR Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod: Worship Sunday 6:00 p.m., Bible Study Tuesday, 9:00 p.m., Neuharth Center, 624-5398 or 1-800-998-1234 students. “I find that much more fun, honestly,” Dustin said. “I quite enjoy it.” By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Dustin Fischer, a junior at Vermillion High School, discovered at an early age that he didn’t mind appearing before an audience. “While going to middle school, in seventh grade, we had a theatre class, and I know how a lot of people are really shy,” he said. “Most of the time, I just didn’t really show much emotion naturally, but I told myself, ‘Sure, I can do this.’ And I would think that I could do that fairly well. “But a lot of people, after they’d see me, were like, ‘Yeah, go Dustin!’ So I thought, you know what, I think I’d like to be in theatre,” Dustin said. There are no formal theatrical performances staged at the middle school level. But through his years in both elementary and middle schools, Dustin said he enjoyed participating in concerts and other musical performances. Moving on to high school gave him the opportunity to try his hand at performing in plays with fellow He’s been involved in theatre at Vermillion High School since his freshman year. “I started in “Dracula,” – I was Renfield, and then we had “The Hairy Ape,” and I was in the chorus for that, and I apparently continue to have a supporting role in the plays and a chorus role in the one-acts. I find it kind of funny how that has been consistent,” he said. Dustin enjoys watching how a group of people can start with nothing more than a script, and eventually, through working together, produce a piece of work that the community will enjoy. “I like the progress of how it happens. On week one, day one, we’re basically saying, ‘What are we doing?’ We have no idea, really. The play is a pantomimed dramatization brought to life through the use of mask, movement and music. The story of the play, inspired by events that took place at Foxconn factories in China from 2010-2013, follows a young couple’s attempt to be united amidst the dehumanizing world of manufacturing. It will be presented to the public on Friday, Jan. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Vermillion High School Performing Arts Center. Vermillion High School students also will stage a musical later this year. Dustin said he likely will play a role in that production from behind the scenes. “Frankly, I can’t really sing very well, so I’ll probably just be on the crew for that,” he said, laughing. “I love to still be active, and helping.
