Over Museum to being the operator of a small downtown business. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the annual Vermillion Area Chamber of Commerce and Development Company (VCDC) banquet, Dorothy was presented with the United Way Volunteer of the Year Award by Dan Kenton, United Way president, and Kelsey Collier-Wise, United Way executive director. She was presented the award in recognition of her work in Vermillion for the last half century. According to a letter nominating her for this honor, Dorothy was instrumental in establishing Vermillion’s first recycling program. She was also a leader in founding the Friends of the W.H. Over Museum, and fundraising for the museum’s move to its current location. The letter also noted that Dorothy has always been willing to lend a hand in the kitchen for church functions and celebrations. “Even though she’ll be turning 90 later this month, she still runs a small business,” Dan said, reading from prepared remarks. “This recognition may be belated, but it is well-deserved.” “The recycling program was really started by half a dozen teenage girls who really thought this is what we have to do,” Dorothy said. “We have to conserve our natural resources.” Dorothy said her daughter and a couple of her friends came to her and asked her to help them pick Bringing You up recyclables. “We started with glass, and every Saturday morning – and we had it in the newspaper, the Plain Talk helped us out – we went around and picked up the glass that people had decided to contribute,” she said. A local man let Dorothy use his pickup to collect the glass bottles. “When we got several barrels full, I had to figure out what were going do next. What were we going to do with all of this stuff?” she said, drawing laughter from the banquet crowd. Dorothy discovered that a city in Minnesota had a plant that produced things made of glass. The company agreed to take the glass Dorothy and the teen girls had collected, and the money they received “just about covered the cost of the gas and oil to get it up PEACE of MIND David L. Remember, your young people are the same kind – they have a lot of good ideas and many of them are important to our lifestyle.” Sheepskin Slippers To Keep Your Feet Warm Now 1/2 Price!
