Meet Brendan
Johnson
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
“You can take a boy out
of Vermillion but you can't
take Vermillion out of a
boy.”
This variation of an old,
familiar proverb perhaps
best describes Brendan
Johnson.
Brendan, the son of Barb
and Sen. Tim Johnson, was
born in Vermillion, and
moved with his family to
Washington, D.C. after his
father was elected to
Congress in 1986.
He later returned to
Vermillion to attend the
University of South Dakota
where he was selected for the
Harry S. Truman
Scholarship. Brendan went
on to attend the University
of Virginia School of Law
where he was president of
the Student Bar Association
and a member of the Raven
Honor Society.
Johnson was nominated
by President Barack Obama
to be the 40th United States
Attorney for the District of
South Dakota and was
unanimously confirmed by
the United States Senate on
Oct. 15, 2009.
Today, Brendan, his wife,
Jana, and their four children
reside in Sioux Falls, but it
became clear to everyone
attending the Vermillion
Chamber of Commerce and
Development Company’s
annual banquet Feb. 6 that
Vermillion will always be his
home.
He was the banquet’s
keynote speaker, and he
talked briefly about his
family’s experiences after his
father, was elected to
Congress in 1986 and the
family moved from
Vermillion to Washington,
DC.
“You don’t realize the
sense of community that we
have here in Vermillion until
you live somewhere else,” he
said. “Moving to
Washington, DC – there is
community there, but it’s
different. No longer did
everything revolve around
summers doing the reading
competitions at the library
or playing baseball at Prentis
Park. Things were different.
You couldn’t ride your bike
wherever you wanted to go.”
Brendan said the sense of
community that is so strong

in Vermillion really hit home
when, nearly seven years
ago, he and his wife visited a
place where, in his words,
“there wasn’t a sense of
community.”
The Johnsons traveled to
the capital of Ethiopia, Addis
Ababa, and visited an
orphanage there that housed
60 kids ranging in age from
six months to 13 years.
It was at this orphanage
that he and Jana would meet
two children who would
become part of their family
– their daughter, Trualem
and son, Peneal, who are
now siblings to the
Johnsons’ two biological
children, Sutton and
Cooper.
Before leaving the
orphanage with Peneal and
Trualem for the United
States, the Johnsons met
Peneal’s mother.
They talked, and asked
her how she knew that, at
that time, she needed to visit
the orphanage to see her son
one last time.
“She said, ‘about a week
ago, I had a dream of two
little white boys kissing my
son on the cheek.’ So I knew
he must be going to
America, and I had to come
and say goodbye to him.’ She
borrowed money and slept
in the basements of churches
to travel for three days on
buses to visit with us at the
orphanage,” he said.
Peneal’s mother, who was
ill, realized that she likely
would no longer be able to
take care of her children, and
that the orphanage may be
his best hope, Johnson said,
because in Ethiopia, there is
no community safety net.
And, in fact, after he
completed seventh grade,
Peneal would literally be out
on the streets.
“The other reason is
because of what she believed

Give us a call for a quote …
America is about – this sense
of community,” Johnson
said. “The odds of her son
being adopted were
astronomical, because he
was 10 … but she believed
that he would be, and she
believed that he would be
adopted by someone from
America, where he will have
opportunity.
“When people think of
what our country represents,
it is a strong sense of
community. It is
opportunity. In some parts
of this country, there is
opportunity, but there’s not
this strong sense of
community that we have in
Vermillion,” he said. “I really
believe her image of
America is what Vermillion
is – a place where kids can
ride their bikes to any corner
of town. It’s a place that, no
matter where you come
from, you’re going to be
educated by one of the best
school systems you’re going
to find anywhere. And you’re
going to succeed.”
This sense of community
in Vermillion, he said, is a
tribute to its people, and its
organizations and small
business people who give so
much back.
“This is a community
that is growing, that is
getting stronger, but at the
same time does not forget
about those who so often
can be forgotten in other
communities,” Johnson said.
“That’s what makes
Vermillion so special, and
that’s why I’m so proud to
be from Vermillion.”
