Sioux Point Road, Dakota Dunes, SD. Weekend Masses: Saturday, 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, 9:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Meet Jere Chapman By David Lias david.lias@plaintalk.net Holding back emotion, Jon Robertson, a member of the Vermillion Chamber of Commerce and Development Company (VCDC) Board of Directors, introduced a man who is not only his good friend, but also his mentor – Jere Chapman – as the recipient of the VCDC Community Leader Award. The presentation was made at the annual VCDC banquet, held Feb. 6 at Vermillion Event Center, a revamped room that used to simply be known as the banquet room at Pro’s. Pro’s was purchased by Jon last year. He’s done extensive work on both the large banquet space, now the Vermillion Event Center, and the restaurant, which today is known as Howler’s. Jon, who had worked for many years as a restaurant manager for Jere, has simply taken a page from his old boss’ playbook: Forge ahead, don’t be afraid to take risks, and provide people what they want. Jon said he was “especially privileged” to present the award. “This individual,” he said, speaking of Jere, “moved to Vermillion in 1982 because of an opportunity to open a Mexican restaurant in the downtown area. That restaurant was called Recuerdo’s Taco Del Sol. It was so well received that his family move from Yankton to join him six months later. That particular restaurant went through a couple of name changes over the years, and was last known before it was closed because of a fire as Recuerdo de Mexico, or Recuerdo’s.” Since 1982, Jon said, Jere has been involved in many different businesses and leadership positions in Vermillion. “He’s owned a travel agency, called Let’s Travel, an exercise and tanning business in the Chae’s building, a series of restaurants in the Ava Morgan building,” Jon said, “as well as the Chae’s building in both the upstairs and the downstairs. “I wonder if anyone remembers The Upstairs Café? Or the Pizza Pub? Or how about the Pizza Kitchen, or Bib’s Ribs?” Jon said. “My personal favorite, as I was a college student in Vermillion, was the Coyote Bar and Grille, where there were 25 cent taps and 25 cent tap burgers.” Jere started the Silver Dollar Saloon and Eatery, which became the Silver BRULE Creek Lutheran Church, Elk Point, SD: Worship Service 11:00am, Sunday School 9:45am to 10:45am. We get a chance to meet the players and the coaches before they put CHURCH OF CHRIST, 102 Prosp: Sunday Worship 10:00 a.m.; Bible Study 9:00 a.m.; Bible Study 12:00 noon; Wednesday Night Classes, 7:00 p.m. Concordia Lutheran Church (LC-MS) 7 South University Street, Vermillion. His son, Neal, who now owns The Roadhouse, and his two of his grandchildren were present to witness the award presentation. “She (Jan) tried to slow me down many times. It didn’t work,” Jere said, laughing. “We came to town in 1982 for one year. That was the plan, to get the restaurant up and running, and maybe make a few bucks in selling it, and then get out of Dodge. “But what a town to 6 3 ????3???3???36??????? That is what I think is nice about Vermillion. It doesn’t take long to fit into this community, and we’ve got a lot of great people here.” Jere expressed great appreciation for the awarding aspect of community involvement in Vermillion. “I think we all agree that it is just something that you have to get involved in. It is so rewarding. “This is a great honor. My heart will always be in Vermillion, and I thank you once again for this award,” he said.
