Over Museum is home to 25 new residents. There’s a lion, a bear. No tigers, but there is a leopard. They’re stuffed, of course. The taxidermy is a gift from Mr. and Mrs. William Heubaum of Yankton. Heubaum wrote Maxine Johnson, head of the museum’s board of directors, before Christmas, asking if the museum would be interested in taking five of his animals, to which she replied in the affirmative. “The next letter I got, he said he liked the letter and the promptness, and said we could have it all,” Johnson said. The pieces Heubaum gave to the museum range from skins, to mounted heads, to fullsize pieces such as a lion, a leopard and a hyena. “He said he had nine safari trips to Africa, and he’s donated half his collection to the W.H. Over Museum,” Johnson said. “The other half is going to a small museum in Nebraska.” Allen Johnson, Maxine’s husband, said Heubaum took his safaris over a period of 25-30 years. “Sometimes he took his son, and sometimes he took his wife,” Maxine added. “She said she was a very good sport, because one of the bathrooms was a steel pipe in the ground. “She said she didn’t go along after that.” Heubaum worked as a BE SMART. Super NICE! 45046 301st St. – Volin lawyer in Yankton for many years, after which point he wrote four books. “They’re in the process of building a new house, so they needed the room,” Maxine Johnson said. “But he plans to come and visit his animals.” Not only did Neubaum donate the animals to the museum, he also paid for their transportation to Vermillion Tuesday. “That really was a wonderful thing,” Johnson said. Now that they’re here, permanent space has to be found for them. “We’re going to put the buffalo head back in our new mural area, and we’re not sure we can, but we’re going to try to get a circus wagon and theme going,” Johnson said. “It’ll be a long process. We have to gather funding for Plexiglas, placement and designing exhibits, so it’ll be a while. In the interim we’ll have them here and there in the museum. “What I would like to do is just have them behind some kind of (barrier) so people can see them, because I think it is pretty spectacular,” she said. In addition to the donation itself, one thing Volunteers slowly carry a mounted lion into the W. H. Over Museum Tuesday morning.
