Meet Jason Gault
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
It goes without saying
that winning is important
to any coach.
Jason Gault, the coach
of the Vermillion Post 1
Legion baseball team, is
certainly hoping his squad
will continue its stellar
play as it moves into postseason action this week.
There is a special
aspect of his involvement
in the sport, though, that
has nothing to do with
wins, losses, or trophies.
“I like the fact that I get
wedding invitations. I like
the fact that I haven’t had
to go to any funerals yet,”
said Jason, who is in his
16th year of coaching
American Legion baseball
in Vermillion. “Basically, I
like seeing kids grow up to
become men who are able
to use baseball as a tool
for developing coping

skills for failure. The game
is so full of those failures,
and I really feel like when
boys leave here and move
on to college and move on
to their jobs, they take a
little bit of what we’ve
worked on.
“Those things carry on
beyond just the field,” he
said. “They carry on into
the workplace, into
marriages, into being
dads, and so the thing I
enjoy the most is seeing
that development
happen.”
The Post 1 Legion
squad, he said, is “really a
special team. They play
good baseball, but to
understand the team in
general, we’ve just got a
nice group of boys who do
a great job of representing
Vermillion and Legion
baseball. We’re fortunate
to be able to sit back and
watch those guys play the
game most of the season.
They’ve definitely done a
great job of working hard
at practice.”
Being surrounded by
12 guys that love the sport
of baseball, Jason said, is a
great experience.
“They’re also fine
young men. We’ve got a
neat mix of older kids
who are back from
college, and we’ve got
some freshmen on the
team who are starting and
doing a great job for us,”
he said. “It’s really been a
pleasure.”
Jason credits the strong
baseball programs
provided in the Vermillion
community for its
younger players. Nearly all
of the Post 1 team first
played, for example, in the
Teener ranks, where they
learned the fundamentals
of the sport at an early
age.
“These are kids who
have gone through some
great coaching and some
great teams, so I have to
give all the credit to those
junior Teener and Teener
coaches – T.J. Beacom,
and Jeff Kratz and Matt
Houk – for all the work
they’ve done to get these
guys to where they are this
year,” Jason said. “I like to
say that my job is easy
because I get them, and
they’re fine tuned.”
The Post 1 team played
its last regular game of the
2014 season Friday night,
June 11, in Beresford.
Post-season action begins
Thursday, June 17, at Todd
Larsen Field in Elk Point.
“It’s a five-team region,
so it’s kind of a strange
bracket. It’s a doubleelimination tournament,”
Jason said.
As he spoke, Post 1 was
preparing to face Dakota
Valley at Prentis Park on
July 9, after defeating Elk
Point-Jefferson in the first
game of a double-header
that day.
“This game actually
means a lot, because if we
were to beat Dakota
Valley, we would
guarantee ourselves a #1
seed. The #1 seed is
essentially going to get a
bye … and the #1 seed
will play most likely
whoever the lowest seeded
team is within that next
round.”
The champion of the
five teams competing in
the region tournament
this week will move on to
the state American Legion
Baseball Tournament
which will be in Tabor
July 25-29.
“It’s nice and close, and
it’s a great place to play

baseball. There’s lots of
rich tradition there,” Jason
said, “and I know Gary
Kortan in Tabor and the
city of Tabor has put their
best efforts in to clean the
field up and really make it
look nice. It would be
great to be there. It would
be exciting, and would
really be a neat
experience.
“Some of our
ballplayers have three
years of state tournament
experience, and we have
others who have never
been there, so we’d love to
get there,” he said.
The Post 1 team is
working on staying sharp
and focused, while at the
same recognizing the
moments when it is okay
to let up just a bit,
especially to avoid injuries
as tournament play
approaches.
“That’s kind of a tough
thing, and we talked about
that in the dugout. The
right thing to do, I think,
at any level in that
situation, is to throttle
back a little bit, but also to
understand that even
though we’ve throttled
back, we’re still going
station to station,” Jason
said. “They can still work
on their game and they
can still play the game the
right way.
“Fortunately for us,
we’ve been in a few of
those types of games, and
it’s one of those situations
where as long as we’re still
working on those
fundamentals, then it’s
better than a practice,” he
said.
Jason said he feels
fortunate to be coaching
baseball in a community
with a team who wants to
play the game the right
way.
“We have parents that
support that, and we have
a community that
supports it, too, with this
great Prentis Park setting,”
he said.
The best he can do, for
now, is hope that all of
this season’s work by his
players will be rewarded
with a berth in the state
tournament.
“We try to keep them
focused, we try to make
sure they understand that
they need to control what
they can control, and
forget about the rest.
We’re so fortunate to have
this group, and I really do
hope that they win a lot of
baseball games in the
post-season,” Jason said.
“If they don’t, it’s still
been a heck of a ride for
us.”
Thank you
