Broadcaster Press 5 September 15, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com Dave Says Men’s Senior Golf Vermillion Theaters Fun League ‘Ricki And The Flash’ ROAD WARRIOR RULE Dear Dave, I’m trying to get out of debt. I make good money and do consulting for a living. I put about 4,000 miles a month on my car. It’s a 2012 model, and59: Answersmore on it than Book I currently owe it’s worth. I’ve considered selling it, but I’m concerned about Sudoku #1 reliability since I’m on the road2so8much. 9 6 you 7have any Do 3 4 1 5 advice? 4 5 6 3 7 2 1 9 8 - Chantel 3 9 7 4 1 8 5 6 2 7 6 8 1 5 3 2 4 9 Dear Chantel, 7 3 1 4 Rule of thumb number one 5 3 2 it8comes7to5your when 9 2 4 6 8 1 9 6 finances is you don’t want too 8 2 3 of your financial much 6 4 5 9 1 7 picture tied up in things that are 4 9 7 down 8 2 5 going 3 1 in value. 6 Specifically, no one needs to have more 8 9 4half of their 1 7 5 2 than 3 6 annual income tied up in things that go down in value. You’re a road warrior, so whatever you drive you’re Sudoku #3 going to destroy. From a business perspective, you need a 7 8 3 1 6 4 5 2 9 relatively low-mileage vehicle with good8gas mileage that’s 2 9 4 5 7 1 6 3 reliable and safe. You also want something3that’s reasonably 5 6 1 2 9 7 8 4 comfortable. Having said that, 1I would advise9doing a lot 7 8 4 5 2 3 6 of research and getting the least 2 5 6 that meets8all those 3 in car 1 9 4 7 9 4 6 3 7 8 2 5 1 criteria. 3 9 8 2 6 1 7 Since whatever you drive is4going to be 5worth nothing 8 1 2 7 4 some 5 in about 20 minutes, I’d start setting aside 6 3 9 cash every 2 6 5 1 8 month as part of a monthly budget 7 9 a3newer,4better car. for That way, when it comes time to put the old one down, Sudoku with you’ll have a pile of cash to go along#5 your trade-in. 1 2 4 3 would 8 5 But even in your situation, Chantel, I 9 7 6 never advise 8 3 1 4 6 2 9 buying a brand-new car or leasing a5 vehicle. From7a financial 6 9 7 2 5 1 4 standpoint, either of those moves would8 be just3 about the dumbest things you could do! 4 8 6 7 2 9 5 1 3 9 7 3 6 5 1 8 4 2 —Dave 5 1 2 8 3 4 7 6 9 7 5 8 4 6 3 9 2 1 3 6 9 5 1 2 4 7 8 2 4 1 9 7 8 3 5 6 THE BUYING DECISION Dear Dave, I live in Pennsylvania, and I’m accepting a new job out of Sudoku #7 state. My wife and I will be in this 5 4 area 8 2 at7 least two 6 new 9 3 for 1 1 9 8 5 7 2 6 years, and we’re not sure if we should rent or buy4 a 3house. 7 2 3 6 4 1 5 9 8 Ron 4 6 5 1 9 3 7 8 2 Dear Ron, 8 7 2 4 6 5 3 1 9 Most of the time, as long as3you’re 2 8 7 4 6 ready for 1 9 financially 5 such a big investment, buying 2 house is5 a 9 8 3 move. But a 4 1 7 good 6 if I’m in your situation, and I’m9not sure 2 it’s1a long-term 8 6 3 if 4 5 7 thing, I’m going to rent until I see3what the 6future holds. 5 7 8 1 9 2 4 It seldom makes a lot of sense to live in a place for two or three years and sell it, unless you get a ridiculously good buy at purchase and are able to sell for retail without any trouble. Even though the economy is finally, slowly turning around somewhat, I’m not sure that most properties in the current marketplace would go up enough in value in only two years to offset your cost of sale. You’re in a situation similar to lots of military families I help. Often, they’ll be stationed somewhere for just two or three years. They’ll buy something, they can’t get it sold, and they end up with rental properties all over the country. Believe me, that wasn’t their initial plan. Playing longdistance landlord is a pain in the rear! Rent for now, Ron. Then, if you two decide you like the new job and new surroundings — and it turns out you’re going to be there for a good, long while — start checking out the area for a nice home. —Dave The senior golf fun league competed on a single bestball format at The Bluffs Golf Course Tuesday, Sept. 8.
