Dave Says
Artists & Activities Abound At Upcoming
Centerville “Art In The Garden”
Plans are well underway for
this year’s “Art in the Garden – a
Celebration of Arts in Centerville”
which will be held Sunday, August 30
from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. downtown
Centerville, SD. The Centerville
Community Arts Council, Inc. is pleased
to announce that this year’s featured
guest artists at the sidewalk arts
festival will be Judy Thompson and
Elise Parsley.
Judy Thompson’s watercolor
“Silver Lake Reflections” adorns the
cover of the book “Pioneer Girl: The
annotated Autobiography of Laura
Ingalls Wilder”. The book which has
been put out by the SD Historical
Society recently topped Amazons best
seller list. Born and raised in Chicago,
Illinois, Judy now lives in Orange
City, Iowa. Selected twice as artistin-residence with the National Park
System, Judy describes her watercolors
as contemporary Midwest landscapes
and figures. Her watercolor batiks
of butterflies and birds which can be
seen on her website are breathtaking.
Thompson will be available at the
Centerville Senior Citizens Center and
will offer a fun activity for all ages using
watercolor and ink. Be sure to stop
in, view her work and try your hand at
painting.
Elise Parsley just published her
first book in July through Little, Brown
Books for Young Readers. Originally
from Flandreau, SD, Elise attended
Bible College in the Twin Cities and
studied drawing and creative writing at
Minnesota State University Moorhead.
The author-illustrator of “If You Ever
Want to Bring an Alligator to School,
Don’t” resides in Beresford, SD where
her husband is pastor of Skrefsrud
Lutheran Church. Elise will be available
at the Centerville Pharmacy Community
Room. Books will be available for
sale or bring your own copy to be
autographed by the author-illustrator.
Demonstrations/Talks will be given
at 4:30, 5:30, 6:30 and 7:30. Take
advantage of this opportunity to meet
an area artist.
Several other artists/craftsmen
will be featured during the day. Eileen
Halverson, Sioux Falls, will display
rosemaling and offer an opportunity
for people to try their hand at this
Norwegian folk art. Eileen will be
located in the Centerville Senior
Citizens Center. Quilts will be on
display in the senior center, too.
Other tables will be set up on the
street and in the garden including:
Davis ironworks (yard decorations),
Carleigh Oster & Brandon Reif
(reclaimed wood), Barb Kroger (BK
Embroidery), Quinn Kribell (oil
painting), Melanie Fiferlick (doll
clothes), Lindsey Hansen (Origami
Owl), Katie Dale (growth charts),
Marvin Dale (photography), Charee
Housaiux (mittens), Nancy Ward
(snowflakes and more), Melissa

hangings) and more. The Sewing
Room, Luden’s Treats & Treasures,

during the event.
The Horseshoe Diner will be serving
hotdogs and pop. Cindy Sorensen
Zippy Cakes will provide funnel cakes
and walking tacos. The Centerville
Steakhouse will also serve food. Stop
in for delicious ice cream at Luden’s
Treats & Treasures.
During the afternoon, music will
be presented by John & Susan McNeil,
Turkey Creek Revival Band and The
Acoustics (Tyler Cunningham/Tyler

Bring your lawn chairs and plan
to come and meet the many talented
area artists. In case of rain, the event
will be held in the Centerville School
Commons.
South Dakota Artists Group Seeks Families From Each County
To Participate In Statewide Project
Plankinton, South Dakota
- 30 July 2015 - South Dakotans for the Inclusive Arts,
an artists’ collaborative dedicated to building stronger
relationships between artists
and communities in rural
spaces, is seeking families
with children born after
November 2nd, 2014, from
each South Dakota county to
participate in the final stages
of a statewide art project.
Leading up to the celebration of South Dakota’s 125th
anniversary of Statehood,
SDIA enacted “Grow: 66/125,”
a tree planting project
utilizing soil collected from
locations of historical and
cultural significance in each
of the State’s sixty-six counties. A five-gallon sample was
obtained from those chosen
sites to be mixed with the
others uniformly, and once
that blending occurred,
the soil was repotted and
returned to the initial sites
of collection with a bur oak
tree growing it to take root
and greet each anniversary
of statehood to come.
A portion of that symbolically intermingled soil was
set aside during the course
of the project, however,
to be given to one child in
every county born during
the quasquicentennial year
as a symbol of cultural rootedness in our State’s unique
geography and as a gesture
of hope in the future of rural
spaces. If you are the parent
of one of these children or

THE BEST OF THE THREE
Dear Dave,
I’m 61 and on disability, but I’m completely debt-free and
I have more than $1 million in assets. I even try to spend no
more than four percent of the principal each year, so I don’t dip
into it. I need to buy a better car, and I realize that I have three
options — pay cash, do a lease or finance the vehicle. What do
you suggest?
- Linda
Dear Linda,
There’s no way I’ll ever tell you to lease or finance a car.
You have a nice, peaceful financial life, and you don’t want to
mess that up.
New car leases are one of the biggest rip-offs on the planet.
Consumer Reports, and my calculator, both say leasing is the
most expensive way to operate a vehicle. And why would you
want the hassle of car payments when you’re in such good
shape with your money?
I’m alright with you buying a new car, because for
someone like you it’s such a small portion of your overall
financial picture. I advise people to always buy good, used
cars unless they have a net worth or $1 million or more, and
you definitely fall into that category. Still, my advice is to pay
cash or don’t do the deal. You’re more than able to do this
every few years and not move the needle where your finances
are concerned.
Go get that new, better car, Linda. Just don’t go into debt
to make it happen!
—Dave
NO, NO, NO!
Dear Dave,
My wife and I are recent graduates with advanced degrees.
We also have about $300,000 in student loan debt. We’re
thinking about buying a rental property, and the plan is to get
a mortgage with monthly payments of $400 and charge $800
in rent. We could use the extra to help pay off our debt. Do you
think this is a good idea?
Jeremy
Dear Jeremy,
Are you serious? You’re in a financial crisis, and you ask if
it’s okay to buy a rental property? No, no, no!
Right now, you guys are acting like Congress. You have a
huge mess on your hands, and you’re both going to have to
work like crazy to clean it up. That means living on rice and
beans for the foreseeable future. It means no vacations, and
you should not see the inside of a restaurant unless you’re
working there to make extra money.
Again, no! You should not buy a rental property. Even
if you did, this plan assumes that it’s constantly occupied
and the renter actually pays. Those are two pretty big
assumptions. Use whatever money you have to get out of
debt, and live simple, inexpensive lives until you get this
behind you.
Stop trying to borrow your way through all of your
dreams, Jeremy. Doing that will only turn those dreams into
nightmares!
