Family Fun Night
JACKIE WILLIAMS/FOR THE BROADCASTER
The Vermillion Farmer’s Market located held on the Vermillion 4-H Grounds every Thursday was the sight of a special Independence Day celebration this week. The events included a local band, bounce house, horse rides and more
for the community to come down and enjoy. Special guests at the event were the Vermillion Equine Center, the USD
Biology Department providing reptiles and amphibians and Ufford Hills who provided cows for display.

SD CAP Looking
For Past Members
The South Dakota Wing of
the Civil Air Patrol is looking
for qualifying applicants to
receive the Congressional
Gold Medal. The award is
given to those who were a
member of the CAP during
the period from December 7,
1941 to the end of hostilities
on September 2, 1945, during
World War II.
CAP veterans or their
families must provide some
evidence that shows that an
individual served during this
period; photos, identification documents copies of
orders, or mention in a news
article are some of the items
accepted for verification
purposes.
“It is believed that there
are many more that would
be eligible for the CGM,” said
Col. John Seten, the South
Dakota Wing’s commander.
“We discover more names
almost every month as we
comb through our own historical records and carry out
research at state, county and
local archives.”
We are currently seeking
to contact the individual or
the families of John Moodie,
Edward Anderson, Carl
Baker, Lewis Beckwith, Jack
Davis, Chuck Keown, Max
Kuehn, Walter Mollers, Martin Schroeder, Cecil Urban,
Ross Wehe, Leo Weber, and
Roger L’Esperance, Clyde Ice,
Floyd Barlow, Franklin Hyde,
Ken Neville, Dwight Campbell, Ralph Hubbard, Cecil
Shuoe, and Knapp Brown.
“One difficulty when we
discover a potential candidate is that there is often no
contact information at all,”
said Wing Historian Major
Todd Epp. “We hope news articles such as this will spark
someone’s memory and
maybe someone will know
someone and can put me in
touch with either them or
their family. I will then set up
a time to meet with them and
verify any information that
they have. We would love to
identify more candidates for
the award.”
Maj. Epp said there were
two ways people could contact him if they believed they
or someone they know might
qualify for the award. He can
be reached by cell: 605-3515021 or by email: todd.epp@
sdcap.us.
The CAP Congressional
Gold Medal bill was signed
into law on May 30, 2014.
South Dakota’s Senator
Thune, then Senator Johnson
and Representative Noem
co-sponsored the bill. A
ceremony was held in Washington, DC last December
to make the initial presentations. Since that time two
presentations have been
made in South Dakota and
two more are planned.
“Our goal is for every
WWII CAP veteran to receive
the recognition they deserve
for their service and their
sacrifice in defense of our nation,” said Maj. Bruce Kipp,
South Dakota Wing Public
Affairs Officer.

Anyone who thinks they
may qualify for the Civil Air
Patrol’s Congressional Gold
Medal award or knows the
family of a former WWII-era
CAP member is asked to
notify Maj. Todd Epp by cell
at: 605-351-5021 or by email:
