2 Broadcaster Press April 14, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com Teaching and Talent: The Rawlins Piano Trio GET TO KNOW PLANNING, ZONING, VETERANS & WELFARE ADMINISTRATOR: CYNTHIA ADEN By Sarah Wetzel For the Plain Talk Clay County Planning, Zoning, Veterans and Welfare is in good hands. Cynthia (Cindy) Aden is now in her fifth year as administrator of these county services. Aden began the position in 2010. Although she did have background in some areas of the job, there was still a lot to learn. “I had to learn how to administer zoning regulations,” she said. “I didn’t know anything about that when I took the job. So, everything I’ve learned is from square one.” Aden works with countryside zoning exclusively. And, she says, the issues tend to deal with density. “I look at what’s being built out there and where it’s being placed on a property,” she said. “We don’t allow more than three homes per quarter right now, so we can’t have little spot developments. We keep an eye on all of that.” Aden said the reason for this is to support the local economy and in no way hinders growth. “The county’s main purpose in the zoning is to help support agriculture,” she said. “When I’m doing my zoning issues, that’s the thing I have to keep in the background.” Aden also works with city hall staff regarding zoning issues in the one- or twomile area around Vermillion. “That is new,” she said. “It has been interesting to take our two different approaches and try to get something worked out together and get a good compromise. Fortunately, the city staff has been very good to work with.” According to Aden, her background complements working with rural development. “I grew up on a farm north of town,” she said. “So, it brings me back to my roots working on that. Having that experience helps me. When farmers talk about the things that they do in their farming, I know what they’re talking about.” Aden currently lives on her grandparent’s farm, right across the street from her childhood home. “I think I’m still a farmer at heart,” she said. “I’ve always been more comfortable out in the country than I’ve ever felt living in the city.” Even working at the Vermillion courthouse, Aden still has chances to satisfy her agricultural urges. She is responsible for the care of the Veteran’s memorial on the courthouse lawn. “I’m a gardener so I don’t mind,” she said. “To me it’s a pleasure to be able to be out of the office and go and mess around.” However, taking care of the memorial is one aspect of her job that Aden said community members are more than welcome to help out with. “It’s all taken care of with donations,” she said. “Right now I’m in need of donations to help with replacing the flag.” Aden said community members are encouraged to donate funds or their time, to help keep the memorial reflective of the community’s feelings towards area Veterans. A subject that hits home for Aden as she is a veteran herself. “Probably the hardest part of the job is on the Veteran’s side,” she said. “Sometimes it’s hard knowing I’m not going to be able to help the veterans the way I would want to. There’s a lot of different ways people can be eligible for veteran benefits but sometimes my job is to tell them they aren’t going to be eligible for anything.” Aden cherishes the times she has been able to make a difference in people’s lives, especially Veterans. “A young man came in for assistance with a hospital bill,” she recalled. “I discovered that he was a veteran. I was able to work with him and find him benefits that he didn’t have before. Before that, he was basically living with friends and kind of on the streets. Now, he’s got some type of income.” Aden said she has a great life here in Vermillion. Anyone interested in contacting Aden to volunteer assistance for the Veteran’s Memorial may reach her at Cynthia.Aden@ claycountysd.org or by phone at (605) 677-7145. By Amber Margheim For the Plain Talk The University of South Dakota (USD) Rawlins Piano Trio warmed Monday’s chilly spring evening with a cultured sound, as it performed its final concert of the season. Founded in 1987 and named after benefactors Marjorie Rawlins, and the late Robert Rawlins, the Rawlins Piano Trio features distinguished musical artists – who are also on the faculty in USD’s Department of Music – violinist Eunho The concert was held at Colton Recital Hall in the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts on the USD campus. According to the performers, Colton Recital Hall produced a more intimate setting that lent itself to a slightly different kind of concert. Throughout the concert, the trio played small excerpts of the pieces using a few measures at a time to explain and illustrate the thoughts and driving emotions the composers sought to communicate. an ever-growing cohesiveness has allowed them to become more intuitive when performing together. “It gets easier to read everybody,” said Kim. Gray added that because they know each other so well, they are able to do things different from each other while still providing a uniform sound. “We can take more chances and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. We can react from each other and balance off each other. We do that really well now at this point,” said Eunho Kim, Susan Keith Gray and Marie-Elaine Gagnon of the Rawlins Piano Trio smiling together after their final concert for the season in South Dakota. AMBER MARGHEIM/ FOR THE PLAIN TALK Kim, cellist Marie-Elaine Gagnon and pianist Susan Keith Gray.. “I think it is really amazing to see musicians like this in such a small town and have the opportunity to hear this wonderful music,” said Michelle Chaussee who attended the concert with her son Jacob. “It was a good night.” Monday program, entitled “In Memory of a Great Artist”, featured “Trio in F Major, Op 22” by Johann Nepomuk Hummel and “Trio in A Minor” by Piotr Illyitch Tchaikovsky. Turn-Key Convenience Store – Gas Station – Repair Shop & Separate Office Building The audience was then able to listen for and identify these smaller snippets within the movements as a whole during the performance. “We frequently talk a little about the pieces,” said Gray. “We don’t necessarily demonstrate as much as we did this evening. With the lopsided nature of the first piece being so short and the second piece so long we felt like it kind of balanced a little better to talk a little bit about them.” The format change was embraced by the audience and showed the trio as true teaching artists, committed to teaching, as well as performing. The current ensemble has been performing together since 2009 and said that Gagnon. The Rawlins Piano Trio has been performing both stateside and internationally in Taiwan, Panama and Korea, engaging in both performance and teaching tours. “The most recent tour was the trip to Korea,” said Kim. “We played in Seoul, which is as big as big as New York. We played in this beautiful prestigious hall. The piano tune there was really different. We use the 440 and they used something like a 445 and it sounded like very different notes. It was an experience! There is always something on these trips and it can be a challenge. But it is good to experience not having the ultimate conditions.” APRIL 24, 25, 26, 2015 Here’s your chance to own & operate a business on one of South Dakota’s busiest highways!
