The Art of Success Series: PUMP N PAK HAS FOUND A WAY TO DO IT RIGHT By Katie Clausen For the Plain Talk The VermillionNewcastle Bridge, which joins South Dakota Highway 19 and Nebraska Highway 15, is something residents have gotten used to on the landscape since its dedication in 2001. However, once a large project designed to connect communities across the mighty Missouri, and at times controversial, the bridge also influenced and changed commerce in the Vermillion area. “It started out that we were looking at the bridge from Nebraska coming in,” Kevin Annis of Pump ‘N Pak said. “We just felt it was kind of a neglected side of town.” Annis, in conjunction with local business owner Larry Brady, looked at the potential bridge as an opportunity to expand. KATIE CLAUSEN / FOR THE PLAIN TALK Now Pump ‘N Pak has been a staple in Vermillion for many years. “It actually started out where I was managing the Freedom station,” Annis said. “Larry Brady mentioned to me that he was starting a business on the west end of town. That was 16 years ago in January.” Pump ‘N Pak has always been a little bit different from your typical convenience store, and that is what Annis thinks his secret to success has been. “We are always looking to add more selection and quality and quantity,” Annis said. “If there is anything we don’t have that you would like that we can get we’d like to help by getting it in.” Not many convenience stores have that type of a policy or personalized Important Notice Important Notice rtant r There will be service. “You’ll notice that we have everything from dog treats to knick-knacks to magazines,” Annis said. “We have a lot of the things that other stores don’t carry.” This business model didn’t come immediately to Annis and his crew, however. There were trials and tribulations along the way. “We originally thought when we built it that we would have a fast food franchise.” Annis said. “So we put a lot of seating in, but that never really panned out.” For a while, Pump ‘N Pak did have a Hot Stuff Pizza and then a local burger shop, but once those were set in motion they realized there was a different demand; diversity. “It ended up that we just felt that we needed a lot less specific stuff and a lot more options,” Annis said.
