Nook ‘n Cranny: A Vermillion staple, brings tradition home By Katie Clausen For the Plain Talk Throughout the years, the downtown business district has seen firsthand the ebb and flow of Vermillion businesses. But one has remained a stronghold for the local consumer and for the business community; the Nook ‘n Cranny. On a chilly evening, the warm storefront, located at 19 West Main Street, is welcoming and soothing. Many patrons have been coming here for years; some are setting foot in the store for the first time. On this night, they’re hosting a small class where attendees can learn about Christmas tree decorating and table settings for the holiday season. Although there are some trendy ideas and items for the class, tradition still runs deep. “The history of Nook ‘n Cranny began Oct. 17 1974,” owner Gloria Christopherson said. “That is when we opened our doors.” The walls are lined with seasonal items such as Thanksgiving-themed dishes and Christmas ornaments, but the Nook ‘n Cranny’s secret to success, and serving the customer, goes far beyond holiday specialties. “I opened the store with the idea of carrying products that were not available in Vermillion at the time.” Christopherson said. 40 years ago, when Nook ‘n Cranny was in its infancy, there was a certain need for home décor items and home furnishings that were tasteful and crafted with quality. (Katie Clausen) “There was kind of a medium boom of building going on of smaller houses, by young people,” Christopherson said. “We wanted some of the things we were reading about in magazines, but couldn’t find in Vermillion at the time.” Preparations for the store helped develop the physical and spiritual foundation for what Nook ‘n Cranny carries today. “The very first thing, when we did decide to open this store and we went to market in Kansas City, we bought cookie cutters.” Christopherson said. “To this day I sell cookie cutters, nobody had them!” Nook ‘n Cranny’s mission to serve the community and the people of Vermillion is very clear, and has been their objective since the beginning. “Nook ‘n Cranny was just born with that premise in mind,” Christopherson said. “To bring to the community things that were not being offered.” Beyond having a wide array of items available, some pieces are distinctive and hard to find elsewhere at such a caliber of quality. “I love all the people, I’ve met tons of wonderful people,” employee Emma Drissen said. “They get to come in here and find product which is unique.” Quality is something that is important to Christopherson when she orders items for the Nook ‘n Cranny. She does not shy away from utilizing multiple vendors or sending sub-par product back, so that the customer has options and she can bring in inventory in confidence. “I love the purchasing aspect of it,” Christopherson said. “I love the challenge of it when I get a design idea in my head.” The Nook ‘n Cranny’s home décor and household items are often intended to be part of the home’s tradition. Kitchen items, mixes for specialty treats and party foods, candles, tableware and decorations are all part of the Nook ‘n Cranny ambiance. “I think it brings an element of education about the rest of the world,” Christopherson said of her inventory. “My bottom line is that I hope to bring beauty and pleasure in items that someone wants to live with, that they want to look at every day.” Aside from aesthetically pleasing and hard to find goods, Nook ‘n Cranny offers special services to patrons, too. Nook ‘n Cranny employees have experience assisting shopping for customers, providing mailing and over the phone card services, help with decorating tips, and finding specialty items. Complimentary gift wrapping is still available. Newlywed Sarah Dickes registered for wedding gifts at Nook ‘n Cranny. “We are so happy we did a registry there,” Dickes said. “We registered for some really nice unique dishes, very good quality and fun colors.” Dickes was quick to point out the advantage her guests had when purchasing wedding gifts at Nook ‘n Cranny. “Another great thing is that our guests could buy the dishes per place setting,” Dickes said. “Some gave us one setting, and n OIAV, Page 07 CORNERSTONE CHURCH A Place To Grow: Located at the corner of Crawford & Cherry St. Celebration Service: Sunday during the School year 9:00am and 10:30am (subject to change during holidays) in the summer Sunday 10 AM.
