She was a native of Plainview, Nebraska and is currently living in Elk Point with her husband, Bob. They have six grown children. She realized how difficult it was to plan her first husband’s funeral. She sees the real need for the funeral insurance/or pre-plan the funeral to cease the burdens on the families. She used to work in Omaha, Nebraska on Medicare Fraud & Claims and moved to South Dakota in 1995. Brock helps to record those wishes, removing a burden from families at a time when they don’t often have the resources to deal with such decisions. She is a compassionate person who loves helping people with their funeral decisions. She is a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Elk 1x1 Point. STRETCH your dollar with a media that performs State Architects Choose Local Member For Regional Position The South Dakota Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has selected Vermillion architect, Sandra Lea Dickenson, AIA, as one of two Regional Directors to represent the North Central Region of the national AIA. South Dakota, North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin make up the North Central Region which is one of 19 regions in the United States. There are 34 regional directors nationwide, serving rotating three year terms. Because Minnesota and Wisconsin have more architects that either North or South Dakota, the chance to select a representative from South Dakota only comes every 15 to 18 years. Sandy Dickenson has been a Vermillion resident since 1989 when her husband, Ross, was assigned to the University of South Dakota as the Professor of Military Science. Upon retirement from the Army, the Dickenson family chose to make Vermillion their home. Dickenson holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Oklahoma and has been licensed since 1972. She brought a wealth of architectural experience with her to South Dakota having practiced in New York City, Oklahoma, the San Francisco Bay Area, Germany, Denver and Washington State. The Dickenson Family was stationed twice in Germany and still travel extensively. Dickenson has worked with firms of all sizes, the US Army and the Postal Service. She had a home based firm for ten years here in Vermillion but is now retired. Dickenson served on the Board of Directors of the South Dakota AIA for 10 years, serving as state president in 2007. She continues to be active with programs started during her tenure on the board including the annual publication of Architecture SD, a state magazine, and Design:SD a design outreach program to provide visioning for small rural communities. Dickenson also lead the effort to change state law assuring that all counties in the state have the protection of a state building code. “I am humbled and honored to be entrusted by my colleagues with this important responsibility. Because most architects serve urban areas, we must make sure that the voices of smaller, rural communities are heard.” says Dickenson. “This is an opportunity to travel throughout the region and to attend national meetings where I will be able to develop policies that affect our entire profession.” Dickenson talks about her early interest in architecture: I was encouraged by my high school counselor to pursue architecture which is how counseling should work. However, my high school was on an Air Force base in Puerto Rico and no one told me there were no women 1x3 in the field! 1x2 my entire college career, I was the only woman in my 1x4 When I was During class. licensed in Oklahoma I was only the 5th woman architect in history of the state and the first in 15 years. I was the first woman architect in every place I was hired until I came to South Dakota where there were two others. I never saw myself as a trail blazer. I just did every task to the best of my ability. Like other professions, women now comprise about 50% of architectural students. I am very pleased but believe that good design is not a gender prerogative. We are all just architects providing the very best service we can to our clients and our communities. 1x5 STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH your dollar your Ladies MorningToGolf To findoffice near you, call 1-800-EDyou, callwith media dollar with a your dollar STRETC a media that performs find an Edward Jones an Edward Jones office near JONES. 1-800-ED JONES. that performs The Broadcaster reaches more people in Clay County than any other print product.
