New Leader
The Vermillion area Living River Group of the Sierra Club
has selected a new leader. Clarence Pederson was chosen
January 19 to replace Dr. James Heisinger as Chairman of the
group.
Pederson grew up on a farm in Roberts County, and has
lived most of his life in South Dakota. He has served in various positions at the University of South Dakota, as well as in
volunteer positions, including on the Clay County Conservation Board.
Pederson replaces fifteen-year veteran Heisinger, under
whose leadership the local Sierra Club group was instrumental in many positive developments in Clay County and the
region, including:
• Establishing a Canoe/Kayak Trail along the free-running
stretches of the Missouri River and preparing interpretive
signs at access points;
• Supporting River Appreciation Day at Clay County Park
for the county’s sixth-graders;
• Promoting research at Spirit Mound, along with the Spirit
Mound Trust, of which Heisinger serves as chairman;
• Working with grass-roots organizations in Union County
in opposition to the proposed Hyperion Refinery;
• Sponsoring art exhibits, Earth Week events and many
speakers on a wide range of environmental issues, and much
more.
As the incoming chairman of the group, Pederson hopes
to build the Living River Group’s membership and the active
involvement of area residents in conservation issues, community activities and outings, and environmental education
projects. He recognizes that outgoing chairman Heisinger’s
shoes will be hard to fill, but the group’s confidence in its new
leader is clear in the unanimous support for his nomination.

The House State Affairs
Committee endorsed the bill
10-2 Wednesday. Regents officials argued against the repeal
at the committee hearing.
Rep. Jacqueline Sly, R-Rapid
City, said the compact benefits
need to be promoted more and
there can be savings when the
program is used.
Rep. Don Haggar, R-Sioux

good. He served on the Executive Board’s review panel. He
said there are other options
available as well.
He compared it to an

“We have better options

but it’s time to move on,” Haggar said.
Rep. Julie Bartling, DGregory, said more effort
could be made to promote
the reduced-price goods and
services to school boards and
other government units. She
said the legislators on the Joint
Committee on Appropriations
likely could find the money.
