Ag Data
Transparency
Tool Will Help
Farmers Make
Sense Of 'Big
Data' Contracts
HURON – Farm Bureau is
part of a coalition that has
developed a tool designed
to help farmers understand
how their data, gathered
from precision agriculture
technologies, will be used.
The Ag Data Transparency
Evaluator was created to
help farmers understand
where their data is going,
who has access to it and
who has control over it.
Scott VanderWal is the
third generation on his family's farm north of Volga, S.D.
As a producer he welcomes
this new way to untangle
some of the confusion about
"big data," and as a leader
in Farm Bureau he says he's
glad to see the organization
taking action on this important issue.
"Any time we use precision ag technology, there's
an abundance of data
produced about our fields,
our equipment, our crops
and even our specific yields.
Where does that data go, and
who has access to it? These
are questions we need to be
asking," said VanderWal, who
serves as President of the
South Dakota Farm Bureau
and in January was elected
Vice President of the American Farm Bureau Federation.
The Ag Data Transparency Evaluator requires
participating ag technology providers to answer 10
key questions about their
technology products' use
and control of farmer data.
A third-party administrator
then reviews the answers
and determines whether the
products meet the standards of transparency set by
the Privacy and Security
Principles for Farm Data, an
agreement reached in 2014
by ag groups and ag tech
providers. Products that
meet these standards will receive the "Ag Data Transparent" seal to be displayed on
promotional materials and
product pages.
Additionally, farmers
can visit the website, www.
fb.org/agdatatransparent,
to view and compare all the
products and services that
have voluntarily undergone
the evaluation.
Some of the questions addressed by this tool include:
What categories of data are
collected from the farmer?
Will the technology provider
obtain the farmer's consent
before providing other companies access to the data?
Will the technology provider
notify the farmer if a breach
of data security occurs that
causes disclosure of the data
to an outside party?
"All these new ag technologies bring tremendous
benefits, but it's important
to keep a sharp eye on matters of security and privacy
when so much specific data
is produced from our acres.
This new evaluator tool is
going to be very helpful as
we try to decipher which
tech products pass muster
on who owns our data, how
it's used and whether it's
shared," VanderWal added.
The coalition behind this
Ag Data Transparency Evaluator includes both farmerled industry organization
and ag technology providers.
The list of collaborators can
be seen at www.fb.org/agdatatransparent. The Ag Data
Transparency Evaluator is
non-profit corporation governed by a board of directors from the participating
organizations. The corporate
bylaws require that all actions be approved by the
farmer-led organizations,
making the evaluator truly
a farmer-driven initiative
not controlled by the ag
technology providers whose
products are reviewed.
