Pick Up Four
Academic
All-Summit
League
Honors
ELMHURST, Ill.—South
Dakota seniors Jeff O’Connell,
Kelsey Barrett, Emily Grove
and Katie Wetzstein have
been named to their respective Summit League Outdoor
Track & Field Academic
All-League teams, as voted
on by the institutions faculty
athletic representatives and
sports information directors.
All four Coyotes qualified
for the NCAA West Preliminaries in their respective
events and three were Summit League champions.
O’Connell earns the
second academic honor for
the outdoor season, having made the team in 2014.
O’Connell captured a Summit
League title in the long jump
with a leap of 23 feet, 11 ¾
inches. He also placed sixth
in the high jump and ran on
the Coyotes’ 4x100 and 4x400
relays. He qualified for the
NCAA West Preliminaries in
the long jump. O’Connell received his bachelor’s degree
in 2015 with a cumulative
undergraduate GPA of 3.79.
He began his Masters of Education Administration in the
fall and holds a 4.00 graduate
GPA.
Barrett made the Summit League’s academic team
for cross country, indoor
track and field, and now
outdoor track and field in
2015-16. Barrett captured a
pair of Summit League titles,
winning the 10,000 meters
in 35:58.03 and the 5,000
meters in 17:10.26. She also
qualified for the NCAA West
Preliminaries, where she
finished 37th in the 10,000.
Barrett holds a 3.76 GPA and
will finish off her bachelor’s
degree in psychology with an
internship this summer. She
has been accepted and plans
to enroll in USD’s addiction
studies master’s program in
the fall.
Grove collects her second
outdoor honor, as the only
athlete to have made the
team in 2013. Grove set the
Summit League Championships meet record by winning
the pole vault in 14-2 ½.
Grove was one of 12 athletes
to advance out of the NCAA
West Preliminaries in the pole
vault. She’s set to compete
at the NCAA Championships
next Thursday. Grove received her bachelor’s degree
in 2015 with an undergraduate GPA of 3.76. She holds
a 3.67 graduate GPA as she
pursues her master’s degree
in kinesiology and sports
science.
Wetzstein is the only
member of either team to
receive the award for the
third consecutive season.
She also made the Summit
League’s academic team for
all three seasons in 2015-16.
Wetzstein scored 17 points
at the Summit League meet
with a runner-up finish in the
1,500 meters, fourth place in
the 5,000 and fifth in the 800.
She posted the 10th-fastest
time in the 1,500 meters at
the NCAA West Preliminaries with a 4:21.18 clocking,
narrowly missing a trip to Eugene. Wetzstein graduated in
May with a bachelor’s degree
in medical biology, boasting
a 3.93 GPA. Wetzstein plans
to attend the University of
Nebraska Medical Center
to obtain her doctorate of
physical therapy.
To be eligible for the
Academic All-Summit League
team, a student-athlete must
have a cumulative gradepoint average of at least
3.30, completed one full
academic year at the current
institution and participated
in 50 percent of their team’s
competitions. The men’s and
women’s teams are made up
of 10 student-athletes receiving the most votes with all
ties standing.
