Today, scattered throughout the hills that made up the fighting plain are statues, markers, and memorials dedicated to those who fought. Toward the middle of the battlefield stands the Eternal Light Peace Memorial with the inscription: “an enduring light to guide us in unity and fellowship.” Even after I left Gettysburg that day, those words stayed with me. During a meeting with the Egyptian Parliament, we received a number of questions about where America stood and what we stood for. The conversation underscored why it is so critical to have leaders and a general public who understand our history and the principles we’ve proclaimed for the last 240 years. Youth involved in the program have begun several projects throughout the Black Hills including the recent maintenance, building and installation of seven trail bridges on the Dakota 5-0 trail located near Tinton Road, southwest of Spearfish. The Forest Service is working to add the Dakota 5-0 trail to the official Forest system by meeting certain parameters and specifications. “We want to make sustainable trails that don’t wash out when it rains,” said Paul Bosworth, Civil Engineer, Black Hills National Forest. “We are working to create a trail that is sustainable and fun for users.” The YNRP will work with various Forest departments on other projects in June and July including recreation, wildlife, botany and range. The program ends on July 22, 2016 with a recognition ceremony held at the Boxelder Job Corps Center located near Nemo. “Many of these projects would not get done without help from YNRP,” said Bosworth. “This is also an opportunity to get young people interested in pursuing a career with the U.S. Forest Service.” For more information on the Black Hills National Forest, visit http://www.fs.usda.gov/blackhills.
