August is National
Immunization Awareness Month:
Are You Up-to-Date?
(SPM Wire) August is National Immunization Awareness
Month and the perfect opportunity to make sure everyone is
up-to-date with their vaccination schedules, particularly children headed back-to-school.
Different ages and communications are susceptible to different diseases. Knowing what vaccines you have received and
which you need is crucial.
While it’s a great idea to keep your own records up-to-date
at home, you can always check in with your physician, too.

Vaccinations save lives and prevent serious illness. Be sure
to stay on top of this crucial aspect of your family’s health.
Tips to Prevent the Spread
of Back-to-School Germs
Enhance Your Home Exterior During
National Curb Appeal Month
(StatePoint) If your home exterior looks “blah,” National Curb Appeal Month in August is the
time to borrow successful ideas from builders.
“Builders avoid the cookie cutter look with simple siding, railing, porch and trim tricks,” says
Patrick Graham, strategic product manager with Weyerhaeuser Distribution
To make your home stand out, try these tips:
• Mix it up. Try mixing different siding and trim products, such as pairing low-maintenance
PVC trim pieces from Ply Gem together with fiber cement siding from a company like James
Hardie. Combine cedar lap siding with fiber cement shingle panels, or mix vertical board and
batten panel-type engineered wood siding with stucco-style panels. There are no set style rules;
let your home’s personality be your guide.
• Make a statement. Add visual sophistication with a few trim tricks. For example, use thicker
trim at the gables to make them pop. Or, mix trim widths to emphasize windows and doors. A
new stand-out front porch area on the home with an easy-care cedar floor and vertical cable
railing can add an extra punch of curb appeal to any home exterior!
More tips can be found at woodbywy.com.
This National Curb Appeal Month, take steps to make your home exterior pop.
(StatePoint) Back-to-school is an exciting time of year for
families, but it also means new exposures to germs.
From school desks found to have 400 times more bacteria
than the average toilet, to personal items like backpacks and
cellphones, germs are everywhere. Taking steps to reduce exposure can make for a healthier school year ahead.
Remember to wash hands and your items frequently -- did
you know that backpacks have 10,000 germs per square inch?
Then, use shelf liner in areas of your home where school items
are stored for extra protection. Try using Easy Liner brand
shelf liner by Duck brand with Clorox antimicrobial protection,
which protects the liner from the growth of mold and mildew.
Plus, the liners can be tossed in the wash for easy cleaning.
Parents can help keep classrooms cleaner by providing
teachers with disinfecting wipes and shelf liner to protect
desks, drawers and shelves.

Physical
Activity
Campaign
Encourages
South Dakotans
to Walk
PIERRE, S.D. – The Nutrition and Physical Activity
Program in the Department
of Health is launching a campaign to get all South Dakotans to walk more this summer.
In conjunction with the
Surgeon General’s recent Call
to Walk, the campaign emphasizes walking as the single
most recommended form of
exercise. It’s one of the easiest, least expensive and most
customizable types of physical activity, according to Kiley
Hump, chronic disease prevention and health promotion
administrator for the Department of Health.
“Regular physical activity
reduces the risk of numerous
chronic diseases, including
heart disease, stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, certain cancers, depression and
even falls. Walking for just 15
or 20 minutes per day is one
of the most accessible ways
to stay active, reduce health
risks and improve quality of
life,” said Hump. “Walk with
friends, family, coworkers and
pets in your neighborhood,
community and at work.”
The campaign includes
monthly Facebook photo
contests from June to September. Post a photo and use
the hashtag #WalkToWinSD
to enter. Winners will receive
physical activity trackers or
walking shoes.
“Slightly more than half of
South Dakota adults meet the
Physical Activity Guidelines
for Americans for aerobic activity,” said Hump. “The goal
of this campaign is to encourage South Dakotans to add a
little more physical activity to
their daily routines.”
Data from the department’s behavioral risk factor
survey shows walking is the
most reported physical activity for 39 percent of South Dakotans and the second mostreported activity for another
10 percent.
Visit www.facebook.com/
HealthySDTrails to learn more
about the initiative and participate in the monthly #WalkToWinSD photo contests.
Preventing and reducing
the burden of chronic disease
through increased physical
activity is one objective of the
Department of Health’s 20152020 strategic plan, http://

Archery
Training in
South Dakota
Schools
continues
to Grow
Pierre, S.D.- The National
Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) sponsored by
Game, Fish and Parks (GFP)
currently has 281 schools
trained in the program with
around 20,000 students
participating each year. GFP
hosts an eight hour safety
and proficiency training for
educators free of cost.
Upon completion of the
training, educators are eligible to receive free archery
equipment to conduct the
program in their school.
Schools with trained instructors can send students to
state NASP tournaments. Six
hundred students registered
this past year.
"Studies have shown that
70 percent of participants
in NASP are shooting a bow
and arrow for the first time,"
said Patrick Klotzbach, NASP
coordinator for South Dakota.
"GFP is excited that these
students are getting a safe
introduction to the shooting
sports."
"The kids in NASP are
learning a life skill," said
Klotzbach. "We hope that
these young people enjoy
archery for years to come."
NASP is created upon the
foundation to promote outdoor learning and conservation as well as motor ability
and observation skills in
achieving state and national
education standards.
Archery training for
grades 4-12 has been in place
in South Dakota schools
since 2007.
