PAGE 7 FALL SPORTS 2016 Youmans Excited To Take Cross Country Helm BY MICHAEL HAMMOND sports@yankton.net Yankton head track coach and cross country assistant of 10 years, Luke Youmans, will take over the reins of the Yankton cross country team in 2016. Youmans brings experience in the sport after assisting under Dan Fitzsimmons and Dave Dannenbring at Yankton. “I don’t expect too monumental of changes,” Youmans said. “I’ve coached with Dan Fitzsimmons and Dave Dannenbring and we’ve all coached together and have a similar philosophy on coaching and training, so Yankton dance coach Anne Kinsley addresses the gather- really nothing will be that ing at the YHS Booster Club Kickoff on Aug. 22. different.” Not much will be different with the girls’ team either, who lose last year’s state meet runner-up, Savannah Woods, to graduation, but return two all-state runners and the rest of the varsity BY DYLAN HUGGINS advantage knowing when to squad. sign for things, knowing what sports@yankton.net Madison McClure, third, to order, understanding how and Lauren Eidsness, 13th competitions go,” she said. And now she’s back on the volleyball court. “I had to learn how to trust myself again,” Cornemann said after a preseason practice. “All summer I wore a knee brace until volleyball started. “Then I told myself, ‘Just roll with it and do it.’” The 5-foot-7 outside hitter is back on the court with the Gazelles and ready to help the team turn a corner in 2016. Last season, the Yankton volleyball team went 4-17 and lost in the play-in match to the district tournament. When asked to assess what she sees in this year’s team, Cornemann equated it to a puzzle. “I think those pieces are going to come together soon, and everything will click,” she said. To that comparison, Yankton head coach Tiffany Beste nodded her head. That’s just about right, she said. “The pieces of our puzzle Austin Frick this year are from a variety of different levels, too,” Beste said. “We have sophomores, Kinsley Excited To Take Over Dance Program YHS 8/26 9/2 9/10 9/16 9/22 9/29 10/8 10/11 10/13 10/22 Madison McClure time,” Youmans said. “With the girls that come back that have been successful we will fill in around them, but will rely on Lauren and Madison.” McClure, a junior, and Eidsness, a freshman, will lead a team that finished sixth at the state meet a year ago. Young YHS Volleyball Squad Set For Season YHS Boys’ Golf Team Boasts Young But Experienced Roster YANKTON BY BEN HEGGE sports@yankton.net EDITOR’S NOTE: This article originally appeared in the Aug. 15 edition of the Press & Dakotan. Despite having just one senior for the 2016 season, the Yankton Bucks golf team is looking to make some noise. “We have a young team, but we have some experienced golfers,” said head coach Brett Sime. “I’m excited to see what we can accomplish.” One of those experienced golfers will be AJ Fernandez, the lone senior. The Gazelles also have “I’m not taking anybody three seniors — middle hitter Josie Sayler, defensive specialist Darian Tramp and Cornemann (outside hitter) — in the mix. But even there, there’s not a lot of varsity experience. And that’s made preseason practices all the more important, Beste said. “We’re still working through rotations and servereceive and defenses to see what the best fit is going to be,” she said. “But I know in our first couple matches, we’ll continue to see that puzzle get put together.” A big part of that puzzle has quite a bit to do with the question of how to replace the production of outside hitter Becky Frick, who graduated as the program’s secondleading attacker (847 kills).
