Broadcaster Press 7 October 4, 2016 www.broadcasteronline.com South Dakota Proclaims October As “Careers In Construction Month” SIOUX FALLS, SD – The Associated General Contractors of South Dakota (AGC), along with Governor Dennis Daugaard, via an Executive Proclamation, proclaim October 2016 as “Careers in Construction Month” across South Dakota! A key aspect of the AGC’s on-going workforce development goal is to show students the rewarding career opportunities available in construction. With the evergrowing need for skilled professionals in the construction industry, there has never been a better time for education and industry to work together to help students build successful construction career pathways. The AGC will be hosting four Construction Awareness Days (CAD) events in October to coincide with Careers in Construction Month. The first will take place in Pierre at the Oahe Speedway on Oct. 6, followed by Sioux Falls at CTE Academy on Oct. 11, then in Rapid City at Western Dakota Tech on Oct. 18, and finally in Watertown at LATI on Oct. 18. A fifth event is planned in Mitchell at MTI on Nov. 16. Construction Awareness Days (CAD) brings area students together to learn more about the different & exciting careers in construction and expose them to hands-on construction skills. Students participate in life-like construction activities such as operating heavy equipment, forming concrete, surveying, an electrical station, a plumbing station and a carpentry skills course. In addition, students get the opportunity to learn more about the construction-related programs South Dakota Tech schools offer. The goal is to spark an interest in a construction related career, in as many students as pos- sible, and expose them to the industry. Above highlighting just the skills, CAD also highlights member companies in the industry who get to share their talents with prospective students who may be looking for a career in construction. CAD is fully funded by AGC member donations & sponsorships and the success of this event is dependent upon those dedicated individuals who volunteer time & equipment. Careers in Construction month was started nationally by The National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and their Build Your Future initiative. October Sobriety Checkpoint Schedule Announced PIERRE, S.D. – Sobriety checkpoints are planned in 19 South Dakota counties during the month of October. The South Dakota Highway Patrol conducts the monthly checkpoints as a way to discourage motorists from drinking and then driving. The Patrol plans to hold 23 total checkpoints. October checkpoints will be held in: Brookings, Brown, Charles Mix, Clay, Codington, Custer, Day, Gregory, Hughes, Lawrence, Lincoln, Minnehaha, Moody, Pennington, Roberts, Spink, Stanley, Tripp and Walworth.
