Farm Food Safety Training Sioux Falls Feb. 24
BROOKINGS, S.D. - A training in farm food
safety will be held in Sioux Falls, Feb. 24, 2018
for fruit and vegetable growers at the SDSU
Extension Regional Center (2001 E 8th St.).
Training begins at 8:30 a.m. and will run
until 4 p.m. Preregister by Feb. 20, 2018, registration details below.
"Much of the training will focus on creating
farm food safety plans, focusing on potential
food safety risks ranging from watering practices, animal contact, people, and equipment,"
said Rhoda Burrows, Professor & SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist.
Attendees will have the opportunity to
map their own farm's features and assess
their own operations for potential risks and
scale-appropriate best practices.
Both digital and hard-copy plan templates
will be available; attendees may bring their
laptops to input data directly or they can
simply make notes on handouts.
Topics covered will include the latest
rules under the Food Safety Modernization
Act (FSMA) and determining if or when those
rules will apply to a given operation.
The latest research-based recommendations for reducing risks from the field to the
market will be presented, as well as information sources, templates, and other tools
for optimizing production and post-harvest
handling practices.
Space is limited. The registration deadline
is Feb. 20, 2018.
The registration fee for this training is $25
and will cover materials, lunch and coffee
breaks. The fee increases to $35 after deadline, and is subject to availability.
Support from the South Dakota Department of Agriculture Specialty Crops Block
Grant, and the United States Food and Drug
Administration allows SDSU Extension to keep
the cost for participants at a minimum.

or 605.394.2236.
New GFP Outdoors Mobile App Available
PIERRE, S.D. – The South Dakota Game,
Fish and Parks (GFP) is inviting hunters, anglers, campers and all other outdoor enthusiasts to update, download and explore its new
mobile app.
“The new mobile app features a digital
backpack so users can customize it with
favorite maps, licenses, handbooks and key
dates,” stated Calley Worth, GFP digital content strategist. “The app provides the ability
to view maps offline if the user is in an area
with little to no cell phone service. This is one
of the main features users asked for prior to
developing the app. Users must download
or sign into their account before heading out
to the field to receive the most up-to-date
information from these features. We also want
residents and nonresidents to know that they
can sign up for notifications regarding hunting
season start and end dates and application
opening and closing dates.”
Reminders to App Users:
•Allow the app to send or push notifications and also opt into allowing location
access. These will be prompted upon opening
the app. Accepting this feature will allow
users the ability to use the GPS and key dates
feature.
•If users had the old version of the GFP
Outdoors app on their phone, the new version will be available as an update in the App
or Google Play Stores.
•If users did not previously have the app,
it is available by searching ‘GFP Outdoors’ in
the App or Google Play Stores.
“The mobile app is designed for Android
systems 6 and up and iOS systems 10 and
up.Users may need to update their software
if they cannot download the app or if the
app will not update to the newest version,”
concluded Worth.
