Broadcaster Press 7 April 16, 2019 www.broadcasteronline.com Churches, Aberdeen Bakery Highlighted In “South Dakota History” PIERRE, S.D.—Early churches and an Aberdeen bakery are featured in the annual historic preservation issue of “South Dakota History,” the quarterly journal of the South Dakota State Historical Society. In an article entitled “‘In the footsteps of the pioneer’: Ethnic Settlers and Their Churches in Brown County,” Brad Tennant explores ethnic community building in the late 1800s and early 1900s. New immigrants tended to settle together based on their ethnicities, and for many, the church became a central space to gather and create a new community. In Brown County, this connection led to the listing of four churches—Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish and Welsh—on the National Register of Historic Places. Tennant is a professor of history at Presentation College in Aberdeen. “Burckhard’s North Side Bakery of Aberdeen: A Community Staple for Four Generations” by Robert J. Couser illustrates the influence that one immigrant family had on the development of the town. German Russian immigrants AARP Fraud Watch Network Brings Operation: Stop Scams Tour To Five SD Communities SIOUX FALLS, SD - The AARP South Dakota Fraud Watch Network will be hosting free shredding events and identity theft seminars in communities across South Dakota during the week of April 22 – April 29, as part of AARP’s annual Operation: Stop Scams. Drive-through shredding services will be available, free of charge, in Sioux Falls (April 22), Rapid City (April 23), Pierre (April 25), Watertown (April 26) and Aberdeen (April 29). These events are open to anyone of any age, registration and/or AARP membership is not required to attend. At most sites, attendees who are interested in giving back to their community can bring canned food donations to support Feeding South Dakota. Alternatively, paper products or cleaning supplies will be collected in Aberdeen to support The Journey Home. “Every two seconds, someone’s identity is stolen,” said AARP South Dakota State Director, Erik Gaikowski. “The end of tax season is a great time to securely destroy old personal and financial documents to ensure your sensitive information doesn’t end up in the hands of identity thieves.” To avoid having your sensitive information compromised, security experts recommend shredding old documents that display your social security number, birth date, signature, account numbers, passwords or PINs, as well bank or ATM deposit slips, pre-approved credit card applications, and any unneeded medical or investment documentation. For those consumers who use a home shredder, experts also recommend bp Since 1934 Broadcaster Press bp Broadcaster Since 1934 the use of a micro-cut model. Tests have shown that scraps of paper from a straight or cross-cut shredder can be reassembled by identity thieves. With a micro-cut shredder, the paper is rendered into impossible-to-reassemble debris. A micro-cut shredder will be given away at each of AARP SD’s five shredding events. All attendees will be given the opportunity to enter for their chance to win. The Operation: Stop Scams tour will also include free identity theft seminars in each of the host communities. These events are also free and open to any one of any age, but registration is required as lunch will served. Over the decades, the Burckhard family adapted their products and practices to keep the business viable into the late 20th century. Couser grew up in Aberdeen and is a former director of the newborn intensive care unit and neonatal research at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital. An excerpt from “Early Churches in South Dakota: A Lasting Legacy” by Robert W. Sebesta highlights the churches that played a role in the lives of Ameri- can Indians. Having begun as mission churches, they intended to convert and acculturate those who had known entirely different ways of life. Several of the structures remain in use today. Sebesta grew up in Sioux Falls and taught computer science at the university level for more than 30 years. “South Dakota History” is a benefit of membership in the South Dakota State Historical Society.
