Dave Says
Teaching the value of work…and money
Dear Dave,
Is it okay to give very young
children an allowance?
Christie
As Safe As a Neighborhood Bank?
Dear Christie,
Teaching kids there’s an
emotional connection between
work and money is one of the best
things you can do as a parent.
Once your kids are old enough to
do a few simple chores around the
Dave
house, they’re old enough to earn
a little money doing them.
In my mind, there’s absolutely
nothing wrong with putting kids who are three or four
on a basic commission system. If they do the jobs you
assign them, they get paid. If they don’t do the jobs, they
don’t get paid. We put a little dry-erase board on the
refrigerator, and listed the jobs they had to do during the
week with a dollar amount next to each one.
Keep in mind, kids shouldn’t get paid for every little
thing they do around the house. Some jobs are just a
necessary component of being part of a family. And there
are some things kids should do simply because mom
or dad asked them to. Some jobs should have a higher
purpose in mind, too, because as a parent, you should
want to find as many teachable moments for your kids as
possible.
Once they’ve earned their money, sit down with them
and divide it into three separate envelopes—saving,
spending, and giving. That way, they get to learn about
the uses for money while they’re learning how to work!

Dear Dave,
What are your thoughts about online banks? Are they
as safe as traditional, neighborhood banks?
Jeanna
Dear Jeanna,
Sure, if they’re guaranteed by the Federal Deposit
Insurance Corporation. The FDIC is one of two agencies
that provide deposit insurance to customers in America’s
depository institutions. The other is the National Credit
Union Administration, or NCUA, which insures and regulates credit unions.
If you’re seriously considering using an online bank,
there are a few things I’d advise checking out before
making the move. Look into the bank’s track record, and
see how long it has been open. Also, if the bank you’re
considering doesn’t have a name-brand you recognize,
find out the amount of its deposits.
Online banks don’t worry me today like they did
10 years ago. And almost everyone does some form of
online banking now, anyway. If the bank in question has
a good reputation, and sufficient deposits to have some
strength in its FDIC guarantee, I wouldn’t worry about it.

1-147th Soldiers Welcomed
Home From Europe Deployment
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - One hundred
and twelve Soldiers from the South
Dakota Army National Guard's
Bravo Battery, 1-147th Field Artillery
Battalion and 147th Forward Support
Company were welcomed home by
family and friends at Lincoln High
School in Sioux Falls, Oct. 26, after
returning from duty in Europe.
While on a 10-month deployment,
the Yankton-based Battery B and
Watertown-based FSC provided
rocket artillery and logistics support
to Operation Atlantic Resolve,
which builds readiness, increases
interoperability
and
enhances
allied nation partnerships between
militaries using multinational training
events.
Many state government leaders
were on hand to welcome the Soldiers
home.
Gov. Kristi Noem, U.S. Senators
John Thune and Mike Rounds,
Congressman Dusty Johnson and
Maj. Gen. Jeff Marlette, SDNG adjutant
general, spoke at the event and
praised the Soldiers for their service.
"As a mother of three, I am
especially thankful for your service
and the ways you've given of
yourselves to continue making our
world a safer place for my kids
and your kids," said Noem. "I can't
express how thankful I am for the
sacrifices you've made to be away
from your families in service to our
American family."
"To our Soldiers, welcome home,
thank you for your service and thank
you for the excellent job you did,"
said Marlette. "You are part of an
elite group of less than one percent
of Americans who are willing to put
on this uniform and serve. Thank you
for that service."
During their deployment, Bravo
Battery and the FSC had many
accomplishments. They fired 132
rockets, and participated in two
multinational exercises: Dynamic
Front and Breakthrough, which
included a total of 27 partner nations.
They were the first American unit
to fire the Multiple Launch Rocket
System in Hungary and the first to
fire the MLRS in Germany since 2006.
Bravo Battery and the FSC also
re-established the supply and part
ordering system for MLRS specific
parts in the United States European
Command, as well as attaining a near
perfect overall equipment readiness
rate. They also assisted active duty
counterparts to complete munitions
and fuel transport missions, when
assistance was needed.
"Over the last ten and a half
months we have traveled far from
home. Even though we were far
from home, it was never far from
our hearts and minds," said Capt.
Daniel LaMaack. commander of
Bravo Battery. "This mission from a
strategic level has importance. For
the future success of our nation and
our European allies, it was deemed
necessary to bring this very special
unit to Europe.
"We can never repay you for the
sacrifices you've made, but I will
support you and your families," said
Noem. "I will pray for you as you
transition back into civilian life. And
I will say thank you. Over and over
again. You can count on that."

Supercharged
Halloween
By
Daris Howard
Though Lenny had won the last round with his uncle
the previous Halloween, when he asked me if I wanted
to be in on his next prank, I declined. From my record of
the pranks over the years, his uncle had more wins than
Lenny did. But Lenny knew he could count on Butch and
Buster, and, true to form, they agreed to join him. Their
success with the cat was still fresh on their minds, and
they hoped to add to it.
“What do you have in mind this year?” Butch asked.
“Well,” Lenny said with a sly smile, “I just happen to
know that Uncle has an electric fence charger in his barn,
along with some fence wire. My mom sent me to get milk
from him down at his dairy barn, and I decided to do
some scouting around for an idea while he was busy milking. That’s when I saw it. I hadn’t ever seen it before, so I
checked the old charger just to make sure it worked.”
“Did you touch it?” Buster asked.
“Do I look daft to you?” Lenny said. “I put on some
thick gloves and plugged in the fence charger. Then I spat
on a piece of hay and touched it across the two poles of
the charger. The hay lit up like a Fourth-of-July sparkler.”
“Won’t he miss it if we steal it?” Butch asked.
“We ain’t going to steal it,” Lenny said. “We’re just going to borrow it for the night, and it won’t even leave his
property. We’ll just string wire quietly around the wood
fence by his house. Then, when it’s all set, we’ll make lots
of noise. When he comes running out, he’ll run right into
it, and we’ll get a good laugh when the jolt knocks him on
his backside. The fun part will be that it’s his own fencing
material.”
Lenny knew he couldn’t nail the insulators onto the
posts or his uncle would hear, so he had to figure out how
he could attach them quietly. He decided he could put a
wrap of electrical tape around the wire on top of the posts
and then tape it down. Besides, it only had to last long
enough for his uncle to touch it.
Halloween night finally came, and the three boys,
dressed in black and carrying rolls of electric tape, made
their way stealthily across Lenny’s uncle’s yard. They
were almost to the barn door when Lenny, who was leading the way, slipped and fell.
“Confounded ice!” Lenny said in a loud whisper. “I
don’t remember there ever being ice here before.”
“Must have come off the barn,” Butch said.
“The barn roof slants the other way,” Lenny said. “I
bet my uncle put it here, hoping to stop us from pranking
him.”
Lenny tried to stand but slipped again. Butch and Buster tried to help, and they, too, went down.
“He can’t stop us that easily,” Lenny said. “Let’s work
together.”
Holding on to each other’s wrists, they formed a tripod
and were able to stand. Then, still holding each other’s
wrists, they made their way the last few feet to the door.
Lenny reached out and grabbed the doorknob. When he
did, all three of them felt a charge surge through them as
their hair stood on end. They all screamed, slipped, and
fell. The house light came on, and the three boys started
to scramble. In their hurry and confusion, they slipped
and fell multiple times, often on top of each other. Eventually, they were able to crawl off the ice and run away.
At church on Sunday, the three of them were scratched
and bruised. Lenny told me the story.
“Weren’t you wearing gloves?” I asked. “You shouldn’t
have gotten shocked through gloves.”
“A person can’t wrap electrical tape with gloves on,”
Lenny said defensively.
About then, Lenny’s uncle came up, smiling. “You know,
my cows seem to miraculously get out on Halloween, so
I decided to rig up some electric fencing.” And then, as if
reading our minds, he added, “They even seem to be able
to open doors, so I decided I needed to electrify the doorknob to stop them.”
As Lenny’s uncle grinned and walked away, Lenny said,
“That was not about cows at all, but was just a bunch of
bull.”
