Basketball
have begun their
2019/20 season. The
one graduating senior last year, so the
team’s dynamic has stayed strong
throughout the past two years. This season
the boys have two seniors: Sam Ward and
Max Mayer. The VHS Girls’ team, this season,
has four seniors: Kenzie Mockler, Lexi
Saunders, Cami Regnerus, and Morgan
Kerkman. Sadly, Morgan will be out for her
final season due to an ACL tear. Both the
Boys’ and Girls’ first games were December
13th in Tyndall against Bon Homme. The
Boys’ first home was December 16th against
Bridgewater-Emery. The Girls’ first home was
December 19th against Ponca. The VHS
Athletic Department hopes to see the
Vermillion community cheer on both the boys
and girls at their first home games this
season. The Vermillionaire wishes the
basketball teams this year luck with their
2019 seasons!
Last on the list is the first proper fulllength album from the all-female
Japanese punk band. I only
understand the few parts that are in
English, but that doesn’t really matter
when the band is playing with this
much ferocious energy and writing
such catchy songs. The album lacks
in diversity, but the short tracks make
it so it never gets boring.

senior gymnast this season is Haily
Erisccson. Their season just began on
December 3rd at Sioux Falls Lincoln. The
girls first home meet, their annual Winter
Wonderland, is December 21st. The Tanager
athletes would love to see your support at
their first home meet and we wish them luck
with their season.

I reviewed this album for the September
issue for the Vermillionaire, and my
thoughts remain the same. It is
undoubtedly a gorgeous sounding
record with great songs, but its lengthy
run time combined with the overall lack
of variety holds this one back a bit.

their season on December 7th at Sioux Falls

January 16th so that gives the community
plenty of time to get out in support for VHS’s
Tanager wrestlers. Until then we wish the
team success throughout their season.

The Third Ascension will be the last
original work released with the Glenn
Branca name. He lost his battle with
throat cancer in 2018, but the legacy
he left in his music will live on forever
(or at least as long as I’m alive). His
over 40-year career started back in
1980 with Lesson No. 1, and his loud,
erratic guitar symphonies have been
an influence on many great bands,
including my favorite, Sonic Youth.
Glenn Branca’s last album continued
what he did best - relentless chaos,
even if there are a few dull moments
of it.

Tyler, the Creator - IGOR
Tyler channelled his energy
into a new sound this year, releasing a
heart wrenching breakup album that
shows off strong songwriting skills as
well as his talents as a producer. On
IGOR, he raps a surprisingly low
amount for a rapper, but it is
something that enhances the album,
not reduces it.

Black Midi - Schlagenheim
The debut album from the young
London band almost seems like it was
tailor made to fit my liking. Noisy
instrumentals, odd vocals, and cryptic
lyrics combine to make a release that
never fails to make me grin with glee,
despite it not being a happy album in
the slightest.
A+ Best Song: “953”

a popular-culture icon known

December 25th to wellbehaved girls and boys.
According to History.com, in
Scandinavia legend has it an
elf, named Jultomten,
delivers presents in a goatdrawn sleigh. In Germany
and Switzerland the
benevolent character goes by
‘Kris Kringle.’ In France, ‘Pere
Noel’ fills the shoes of
children with gifts. Then in
Russia a woman named,
Babouschka, is said to leave
children gifts in the hope that
one of them is the baby
Jesus and she will be
forgiven for pointing the
wisemen in the wrong
direction. Different places
have different stories but
where does the jolly, stoutlybuilt image of Santa Claus
come from? The magical
man in red was suggested
first by Clement Clarke
Moore, author of the famous
poem ‘Twas The Night Before
Christmas’ in 1822. It was
later illustrated in 1881 by
political cartoonist Thomas
Nast.
