South Dakota State 4-H Ambassadors
Noem Postpones
The 2020 South Dakota
Attend National 4-H Summit
Week Of Work
BROOKINGS, S.D. - Three South
Dakota State 4-H Ambassadors
joined other teen leaders from
across the country at the 4-H
Healthy Habits Conference and
National 4-H Summit on Healthy
Living to learn how to be advocates
for promoting healthy lifestyle
choices in their communities.
The 4-H Healthy Habits
Conference was Feb. 12 -13 and the
National 4-H Summit on Healthy
Living was Feb. 13-16. Both events
were held at the National 4-H
Conference Center in Chevy Chase,
Maryland.
State 4-H Ambassadors who
attended the educational events
were Brianna Duerre from Day
County, Kayla Fischer from Day
County and Hailie Stuck from
Spink County. Fischer and Stuck
both serve under the health and
wellness priority area in the State
4-H Ambassador program where
they are expected to engage their
communities in proactive health
initiatives and activities.
“I gained new friendships that
are important to me. I also learned
more about what I can do to help the
wellbeing of those in my community.
I am so proud to be part of the
group that went. I came back feeling
energized and motivated to share
the information with others,” said
Stuck.
This year, the summit hosted
a series of wellness sessions
focused on promoting healthy and
sustainable lifestyle choices that
included food allergies, social and
emotional health, physical health,
health advocacy within communities
and opioid prevention. Participants
learned about methods to improve
public health from prominent
lifestyle and health experts.
They also learned how to create
action plans to implement in their
communities and how to teach other
youth about what they have learned.
The 4-H Healthy Habits
Conference was a cohort effort
for land grant universities and 4-H
programs currently receiving the
National 4-H Healthy Habits grant
through the Walmart Foundation.
SDSU Extension is currently in its
third year of receiving the grant.
The conference was an effort to
provide support, education and
professional development to those
receiving the grant, including both
youth and adults. In addition to the
youth attendees from South Dakota,
Amber Erickson, SDSU Extension 4-H
Youth Development Field Operations
Coordinator, and Hilary Risner,
SDSU Extension Regional 4-H Youth
Program Advisor, also attended.
"It is exciting to see our 4-H
members focus on the health of their
local communities. Returning the
Summit's lessons to our residents
will strengthen our state in the years
ahead." Said Timothy Tanner, State
4-H Program Director.
The summit and conference were
made possible through the Walmart
Foundation 4-H Healthy Habits grant
travel funds.

About South Dakota 4-H
SDSU Extension's 4-H Youth
Development Program is a
partnership of federal (USDA), state
land-grant university and county
resources through youth outreach
activities. Youth learn about and
experience leadership, health and
wellness, science and agriculture
through a network of professional
staff and volunteers reaching more
than 9,000 enrolled members with
yearly programming efforts extended
to an additional 35,000 youth
participants.
“As our state,
businesses, and schools
address COVID-19, it is
in our best interest to
pause plans for the South
Dakota Week of Work until
a time when students
and businesses can fully
participate,” said Noem.
“I want to thank the
hundreds of businesses
across the state who
have made thousands of
opportunities to learn
about the world of work
available to our young
people.”
The South Dakota Week
of Work will introduce
students to career
opportunities in their
communities through
job shadows, industry
tours, and other businessclassroom connections.
The week will provide
employers opportunities
to engage with youth
and develop connections
with the state’s future
workforce.
The inaugural South
Dakota Week of Work
was set for April 20-24,
2020. Dates have not yet
been determined for the
postponed event.
The South Dakota Week
of Work is a partnership
of the Department of
Education, the Department
of Labor and Regulation,
the Governor’s Office of
Economic Development,
the South Dakota Chamber
of Commerce and Industry,
and the South Dakota
Retailers Association.

South Dakota Public Universities
Move Rest Of Semester Online
PIERRE, S.D. – As
COVID-19 further impacts
this state and region,
the South Dakota Board
of Regents, and the six
public universities and two
special schools it governs,
must adjust operations
accordingly.
Effective immediately,
all public university
courses will continue by
remote delivery through
the remainder of the
spring semester. Face-toface instruction will not
resume. The spring 2020
semester is scheduled to
end May 8.
Students attending
South Dakota School
for the Blind & Visually
Impaired will work with
teachers remotely through
Friday, May 1, consistent
with state directives
for other K-12 schools.
Outreach visits have been
suspended at both SDSBVI
and South Dakota School
for the Deaf. Audiology
clinics will be closed until
further notice.
Because state officials
anticipate an increase
in COVID-19 infections,
presidents at all South
Dakota public university
campuses have made
the difficult decision
to postpone spring
2020 commencement
ceremonies. Further
details will be shared as
new plans are confirmed.
The public universities’
priority is to ensure that
instruction continues
through the remainder
of the spring semester.
No tuition or fees will be
adjusted unless a student
withdraws completely
from the university on or
before March 28, or the
institution is unable to
deliver a course online.
Students may qualify
for credits to their
accounts in the following
areas:
50% housing credit,
except for those students
approved for emergency
housing at the close of the
extended spring break;
Pro-rated credit for
meal plans not utilized and
