02 Heritage 2011: Education October 28, 2011 www.plaintalk.net Thank You Our efforts to celebrate the history of education in Clay County and Vermillion with this Heritage Edition would not be possible without the assistance the Plain Talk received from countless individuals. People who have offered invaluable assistance to us include Sarah A. Hanson, curator of photographs, archives and special collections, University Libraries at the University of South Dakota, the staff of the W. H. Over Museum, Fern Kaufman and Donna Gross, and Cleo Erickson, whose presence over all of the information stored at the Austin-Whittemore House is priceless. Thanks also to the staff of the Vermillion School District, particularly Superintendent Mark Froke, who helped get the word out that we were looking for nuggets of historical information concerning education in our county and community. Darla Hamm, principal of St. Agnes School, also went out of her way to provide us photographs and suggestions of people to simply have a conversation with about the school’s history. The assistance of Darla and others we talked with helped us tremendously. The process of compiling information and gathering old photographs served as a reminder of the bond between our community and its schools. Clay County has been blessed with good and not so good times for more than a century now, but one thing remains constant – a quality education system. We hope everyone who reads our Heritage Edition will also take a moment to thank our colleagues – the businesses and merchants who purchased advertising to make this publication a reality. Their support is greatly appreciated. Carol Hohenthaner, Media Consultant Travis Gulbrandson, Staff Writer David Lias, Editor Susan Forma, Reception Office Manager Micki Schievelbein, Advertising Director Gary Wood, Publisher The Vermillion Plain Talk A Note of Gratitude... for the moo oot n h ! S I would like to take a moment to thank all of the Vermillion area businesses who took time out of your busy schedules to visit with Carol and I about the advertising opportunity in this Heritage Edition. I also offer our gratitude to you all for participating in bringing this wealth of interesting information to our Plain Talk family of readers and beyond. The Plain Talk has been serving the Vermillion community since 1884 and we believe this Heritage Edition is another shining example of why your weekly newspaper is so vital to our fantastic community. I would also like to take this opportunity to let you know to be watching the weekly Broadcaster as we are working on a re-design that is sure to please our advertisers and readers alike. The Broadcaster, now appearing in your mailbox weekly, has been the premiere shopper Southeastern South Dakota has depended on since 1934. We look forward to getting better and growing with Vermillion in the years to come. Once again, thank you Vermillion area businesses for your support of this Heritage Edition, which also allowed us to make a donation of a portion of the proceeds to Vermillion public and private schools. Plain Talk readers, we hope you enjoy reading this as much as we’ve enjoyed bringing it to you!
