Kathy enjoys role as liaison between
USD Foundation and its trustees
By David Lias

Anyone who has ever had
any dealings with the USD
Foundation has likely
benefited from the efforts of
Kathy Chandler.
Kathy is the director
administration and
constituent services at the
Foundation office in
Vermillion – a place where
she has devoted most of her
working career.
“I’ve been here 38 years,”
she said. “I worked at two
different county auditors’
offices before we came here,
but this has been the
majority of my life career.”
Kathy attended the
University of South Dakota,
and finished her degree at
Bemidji State University in
Bemidji, MN.
“I first started working
for Ted Muenster when I
first came here, except that
he was on leave with the
governor’s office, so I was
actually working for the vice
president for university
relations, which was Ted,”
she said.
She eventually was given
Spotlight
On
the opportunity to either stay
at her position with
university relations, or work
at the Foundation after its
first director was hired. She
chose the Foundation
“My basic responsibility,
the way that I explain it, is
that I’m the HR (human
resources) person, and I’m
also the liaison between the
Foundation and our board,”
Kathy said. “Those are what
I feel are my two basic
responsibilities, and I do a
bunch of other stuff, too.”
The main focus of work is
centered on fulfilling the
needs of the Foundation’s
board of trustees. “Part of
our board of trustees are the
(university’s) president, the
vice presidents and the
deans, so I work with them,”
she said.
She has witnessed many
changes in a career that
spans nearly four decades.
“My job has changed a lot
over the years. At first there
were only two of us in the
Foundation, and now we’ve
grown to 28 people. The
thing that I like most about
my job is working with the
trustees and getting to know
them,” Kathy said. “The
majority of them are alums
and some of them are people
who consider themselves
friends of the university. I
enjoy working with them,
and hearing their stories, and
learning about their
connections here and how
they love the institution.”
The University of South
Dakota Foundation is an
independent, not-for-profit,
South Dakota corporation
organized solely for the
benefit of the University of
South Dakota. Private
giving to the Foundation is a
resource used to raise the
level of excellence at USD.
The Foundation’s mission
is to provide resources for
the university in order to
increase the excellence of the
educational experience
provided by the institution,
with the overriding goal of
creating the best small public
university in the country.
“It is another favorite part
of my job … the trustees and
the Foundation work to
make sure that the high
school students out there
that really can’t afford to go
to college have that
opportunity through giving
scholarships,” Kathy said.
“The supporters of the
university, by giving money
to the University
Foundation, in turn set up
scholarships for those
students.”

KEEPING SMILES
MERRY &
BRIGHT!
THE FAMILY OF HUBERT GREGOIRE would like to express our extreme
gratitude to all of you who supported us in so many ways before and after the
death of our wonderful husband and father. The flowers were both beautiful and
plentiful, the cards were numerous and uplifting, and the stories shared will never
be forgotten. Thanks to everyone for the memorials, food, cards, flowers, and for
just being there. Because of you, our load is lighter and our days are brighter.
A special thank you to Dr. Dendinger, Dr. Garnaas, and Dr. Mikkelsen and the
entire Avera Sacred Heart Hospice team. You treated him with the care and
respect he deserved. Also, a big thank you to Kay and Heartland Home Care for
helping us care for Hube during his final months.
