I remember there were days when I would literally not sleep the night before I had to give a speech.” But Davoux had a good example in his grandfather, who also was a pastor. “(He was) one of the greatest examples to me,” he said. Davoux’s father, an alcoholic he describes as angry and violent, was almost the opposite. “My dad was one of those rebellious kinds of guys who went his own prodigal way,” he said. “I remember there was a point in my dad’s life when there was a kind of spiritual rebirth in his life. He gave his life to Christ. “There was a transformation that happened. He went from drinking and being very angry all the time to (being) a very peaceful man,” Davoux said. Time passed before Davoux’s own “transformation” occurred. PASTOR DEVON DEVOUX Although he earned a degree to become a pastor from Augustana College, he became a fourth- and fifth-grade teacher in Kansas City, Mo. He changed careers in 2002 after he attended a Steven Curtis Chapman concert, during which the story was told of a group of missionaries who were killed. On the stage was the son of one of the missionaries, and one of the actual killers. “It broke in me, because I just saw the fruit of what they had done,” Davoux said. “There was a whole village in Ecuador that was literally transformed because of the work that they did. That changed my life.” Shortly thereafter, he came to work at the Cornerstone Church. It was the last week of 2002. It took some time to adjust to his new role, but Davoux said he’s glad he made the change – and so are his wife Jen and their four children. “(God’s) grace has been so huge,” he said. “He’s blessed us beyond words and helped us every step of the way.” Davoux said much has changed since the time he first arrived, in part because of the transitional nature of university towns. “If you’ve been here for nine years, it feels like you’ve been to three different churches,” he said. “Because the church you look at today is completely different church than what it was in 2003. It’s probably just a handful of people that are the same.” But those people “have been just wonderful to us,” he added.
