08 Broadcaster Press January 24, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com VAST dominates in Sioux City The Vermillion Area Swim Team took to the road yet again this season, this time to Sioux City for the annual Siouxland Sharks Invitational. Twenty-five VAST swimmers competed in the event over two days last weekend. All participants had incredible results. Gabe Telleria, 8, won the overall boys’ 8-andunder high point award. Telleria didn’t lose an event all weekend, sweeping all ten individual events he swam. High-point awards were given out to those swimmers accumulating the most points, based on how high they placed in their individual events. But the Tellerias were not done there. Abril Telleria, 12, won the girls’ 11-12 overall highpoint award. She won the 50- and 200-yard breaststroke, and finished in the top 7 in all other eight events for the weekend. Isabel Telleria, 10, finished a close second in the race for the girls’ 9-10 overall high point. Isabel won the 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard breaststroke and 500-yard freestyle in her division. All-together, VAST accounted for six overall high-point champions, out of a possible 12. Tally Allison, 7, won the girls’ 8-and-under, high-point award. She won two events on the weekend, and only finished out of the top three in one of her ten events. Megan Muriuki was crowned champion of the girls’ 9-10 division. Although she never won an event in her division, she did finish in the top 6 in all ten of her events. Jacob Krier swam to the boys’ 15-16 high-point award. Krier had five first-place finishes out of ten, and finished the meet with seven new best times to his name. Martin competed in only seven events all weekend, and won four. Other great swims were turned in by many VAST swimmers. Nine-year-old Toria Andre dropped over 17 seconds in the 200-yard freestyle. Olivia Granaas, also 9, dropped just under 13 seconds in the 100-yard freestyle, and Anna Hackemer, 14, touched the wall 40.12 seconds faster than her previous best time in the 500-yard freestyle. VAST gets one weekend off from meets, but the swimmers will again get on the road in two weeks for the Mitchell Aquatic Club Invitational held in Sioux Falls.
