We are especially grateful for the extraordinary compassion extended by the Rev. Elmer “Sandy” Aakre, the VFW, the Patriot Guard, the Oddfellows, the Vermillion Police Department, Hy-Vee, employees of Sanford Hospital & Dakota Gardens, the outstanding staff of the Kober Funeral Home and all the people who made it possible for him to visit Pearl Harbor in January. The lowering of community flags to half-mast was an incredibly thoughtful tribute to the man who was a hero not only to his family, but to our country as well.
