04 Broadcaster Press March 20, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Havermann loves community, educational programming for the university By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net Although she was born in Vermillion, Cheryl Havermann left to attend the University of Nebraska. She moved back to town two and a half years ago with her husband Patrick and their four children to accept a job as program assistant with the University of South Dakota. She said she’s glad to be back, and she loves what she’s doing. “I work directly with (Jeffrey Baylor), the vice president of Marketing, Enrollment and Student Services, so I will support him administratively, but then I also do quite a bit of community and educational programming,” Havermann said. Among these programs was the Scripps National Spelling Bee for South Dakota, held for the first time at USD this past Saturday. But Havermann’s favorite program is called Be Like the Coyotes. “It’s a character-building program, where each letter of ‘Coyotes’ stands for a character-building trait,” she explained. C stands for Caring, O for Open-minded, Y for You are respectful, O for Obey the rules, T for Team player, E for Express gratitude and S for Set a good example. “When the kids are spotted displaying those character traits, then they get a ‘Flat Charlie,’” Havermann said. “It’s a little Charlie Coyote that they get their name written on, and then what they are seen doing. That gets hung up in their school on a big banner that we give them.” Spotlight On Havermann the vice president was very supportive of the program when she brought it to his attention, providing her with the tools to get it implemented in schools beginning in March 2011. “It’s rewarding and fun, and the schools just love it,” she said. “I’ve had school (officials) come up to me and say, ‘This has really increased positive behavior and positive choice in our students. It gives them something to work toward.’ “That’s been really rewarding to me, to see some of those positive changes in a student’s life at school,” she said. When Havermann isn’t at work, she and her family enjoy doing a number of outdoor activities, such as camping. They also are “very CHERYL HAVERMANN involved” with Clay County 4-H, she said. “If there is a 4-H event, you will usually see us at it,” she said. Although she has her favorite programs, Havermann said it’s the people who make her happy to come in to work each day. “My co-workers make my job so much fun,” she said. “But I love working with the students, too, when they come into the office for one reason or another. I love being able to help them. Interacting with them just makes me feel like I’m a part of it all.” Lucy F Keith, 1305 Lincoln #102, Vermillion; Seat belt violation, $25.00 Tessa Tigert, 2711 Falcon St., Vermillion; County speeding, $154.00 plus costs Muse Mohamed Bakari, 3600 N. 4th Ave. #201, Sioux Falls; Speeding other roadways, $39.00 plus costs William Larson, 32197 Ponderosa Dr., Vermillion; County speeding, $39.00 plus costs Caleb Michael Tyler Miller, 31354 Hillcrest Pl., Vermillion; Speeding other roadways, $39.00 plus costs Arlene Annika Gylfe, 46670 298th St., Beresford; Speeding other roadways, $39.00 plus costs Lisa Ronning, 30689 475th Ave., Alcester; Failure to make proper stop at stop intersection, $54.00 plus costs FOR THE RECORD Cases Disposed 03/2-8/2012 Kyle Knutson, 29659 SD Highway 19, Wakonda; Tamper with vehicle – intend damage/inconvenience, not sustained at preliminary/grand jury; Vandalism-$400-$1,000-2nd degree, not sustained at preliminary/grand jury; Petty theft 2nd degree-$400 or lress, not sustained at preliminary/grand jury Angela Cherry, 411 Stanford Street #47, Vermillion; No drivers license, dismissed Spencer Brown, 1202 Whiting St., Yankton; Driving with suspended (not revoked) license, dismissed Benjamin Lee Houser, 47267 300th St., Beresford; Failure to stop, $54.00 plus costs Ebony Shanklin, 5614 S.
