Fulbright-Nehru Fellowship
allows Jepsen to conduct research
By Travis Gulbrandson
travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net
An assistant professor of
political science at USD said
his recent receipt of a ninemonth Fulbright-Nehru
Fellowship is the result of
two things.
First, Eric Jepsen said, it’s
the training he received as a
student in Texas and New
Mexico.
Second, it’s the
“tremendously supportive
environment” fostered by the
university that allowed him
to explore and engage in
subjects he’s passionate
about.
“I’m standing on the
shoulders of others,” Jepsen
said.
The fellowship he
received was awarded by the
United States Department of
State and the J. William
Fulbright Foreign
Scholarship board.
It will allow him to
conduct research for a book
project tentatively titled,
“Kerala in the Economic
Reform Era: Ideas,
Institutions and Interest
Groups,” and lecture at
Kerala University in Kerala,
India.
“I’m mostly interested
how around the world, but
in India in particular, how
states, provincial
governments, municipal
governments or local
governments are responding
to the competitive pressures
of the global economy,”
Jepsen said. “I seek to
explain why states have been

doing what they’ve been
doing in terms of how they
intend to court investment
and develop their local
economy. …
“The Kerala case has
been particularly interesting
because it has been wildly
successful in development,
meaning it has the highest
literacy rates, the highest
child inoculation rates in the
country, it has effectively
universal access to
education,” he said. “That
differentiates it from the rest
of the Indian state, which is
slightly below or significantly
below Kerala in terms of
many of those health and
education concerns.”
Jepsen’s wife, Kaiya
Ansorge, and their fouryear-old son will accompany
him to India for the 20122013 academic year.
“That makes it a very nice
adventure/opportunity to get
work done on this book
project, and to interact with
scholars in and outside the
classroom there,” he said.
He earned his BA in
political science from Texas
Lutheran University in 1994,
followed by an MA in the
subject from the University
of New Mexico in 1996.
Jepsen earned his Ph.D.
in political science from the
University of New Mexico in
2006, the same year he
joined the staff at USD.
The classes he teaches
deal with world politics,
comparative politics,
globalization and political
economy, among other
subjects.
In addition, he is chair of
the Global Learning
Council, faulty advisor for
the Political Science League,
founder of USD’s
International Film Series and
oversees high distinction
projects in the Honors
program.
Jepsen said global politics
and economics both are
long-term interests.
“I was always a
compulsive reader of the
newspaper,” he said. “Maybe
in the seventh or eighth
grade I actually stopped
reading the sports page for
breakfast and switched over

NEEDED FOR RESEARCH
“Neural and Behavioral Correlates of PTSD
and Alcohol Use”
If you have been deployed to Iraq or Afghanistan, are right-handed, and are between
the ages of 18 and 45, and are not currently pregnant, you are being invited to

behaviors. This study is being conducted by Drs. Gina Forster, Jeffrey Simons and
Raluca Gaher at The University of South Dakota.
Participation in this study involves completing an interview and questionnaire with a
research team member, which should take 3 hours or less. Your participation in this
study is completely voluntary and your responses will be confidential.
You will be given $100 for completing the initial interview and eligible participants
will be invited to participate in a second study using magnetic resonance imaging
(MRI) in which you will receive $300. If you are active duty military, you will only be

business page.
“Since then I’ve switched
back, but that’s just the
changing nature of getting
older,” he said.
When he’s not in class,
Jepsen and his family enjoy
hiking, backpacking and
camping.
“We try to spend multiple
weekends during the
summer in a tent each year,”
he said. “The goal is always
to spend at lest 25 days
sleeping outside per year,
and we’re usually able to do
that, especially when the
weather’s been so nice.”
Jepsen also enjoys
endurance running, and has
a collection of “a couple
thousand” records and CDs.
“I am thankful that Kaiya
allows this,” he said in an email.
As for working at the
university, Jepsen said his
favorite aspect as interacting
with the students, both in
and out of class.
He also appreciates his
coworkers.
“I love being part of a
scholarly community …
among my colleagues in the
department, and then also
other departments around
campus. It’s a tremendous
honor,” he said.
“Hardly a day goes by
that I don’t think of how
lucky I am to live in this
world of ideas, and to be
able to converse with my
fellow faculty members.”
