In addition to having served the position in an interim capacity since last July, he also is currently serving as the University Archivist/Special Collections Librarian – a position he has held for the past three years. “It’s a busy, busy year,” he said with a laugh. “I’ve been wearing multiple hats now for quite some time.” Daily took over as dean for Dr. Anne Cooper Moore. He came to USD from Northwestern College in St. Paul, MN, where he directed the library. He holds a Master of Science in Library Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and a master of Theological Studies from Duke University Divinity School. As dean, Daily said he oversees “the facilities and the faculty staff and the entire program of the university libraries, which includes ID Weeks here on the Vermillion campus, and the Wegner Science and Health Information Center in Vermillion on the Sanford School of Medicine campus.” However, as archivist he still is overseeing the approximately 450 archival collections, Spotlight On which feature books, photographs and documents, among other artifacts. “I think we occupy about 5,000 linear shelf feet of space for collections total,” Daily said. Part of one of these collections – the William J. Janklow Papers – currently is on display in I.D. Weeks Library on the USD campus, which was culled from more than 600 boxes worth of files. “We’re still in the process of transferring the papers from his law office to USD. We’ll probably complete that process in 2013,” Daily said. “As you see in the exhibit, there are things beyond the letters, reports and documents. There’s memorabilia and artifacts relating to his entire political career. … “The exhibit is kind of heavy on the memorabilia to give a picture of who Janklow was as a politician,” he said. Janklow is only one of approximately 30 South Dakota politicians whose papers are housed at USD, including former senators Larry Pressler Linda’s Angel Crossing -Where gals of all ages love to shopKids Easter Dresses Infants, Toddlers, Boys size 2-7 Girls size 2T-16 and Jim Abourezk, and former Gov. Richard Kneip. “There’s a lot of media in there,” Daily said. “Video and film, everything (including) film of speeches and campaign spots.” There are two processes for an exhibit to go on display in the library, Daily said. Those that are artrelated are usually decided on a one- to twoyear basis by a committee in the University Art Galleries. “Within the library it’s a little more driven by if somebody has an idea, or if we’re trying to … observe (an event),” Daily said. For example, the Janklow papers are being featured because of their recent arrival, and to mark the one-year anniversary of the former governor’s death. “The Holocaust exhibit that ran here in the winter was a discussion for a number of us in the library,” Daily said. “Planning for that, like with the Janklow exhibit, was with a number of us in Archives and Special Collections to put that together and moved it forward.” Daily said he expects a new archivist to be hired some time this year.
