One in a VerMillion
Meet Sue Jopling
By David Lias
david.lias@plaintalk.net
The recipient of this
year’s United Way of
Vermillion Volunteer of the
Year Award is best known
for her work with the Back
to School Backpack
Program.
“But if there is a need to
be filled in this
community, she is always
willing to fill it,” said Dan
Kenton, president of the
United Way of Vermillion,
shortly before he and
Kelsey Collier-Wise, the
organization’s executive
director, presented the
award to Sue Jopling at the
annual Vermillion Area
Chamber of Commerce
and Community Awards
Banquet, held March 14 at
the Eagles Club.
Kenton noted that
Jopling’s contributions to
the community range from
participating in
international mission trips,
filling sandbags during
Missouri River flooding in
the Vermillion area, and
giving input to the Civic
Council Board as one of its
members, to serving as a
Caring Clown and
providing her talents to her
church and the
community’s schools.
“She has committed her
life to caring for others and
making them feel special,”
Kenton said. “The success
of the Back to School
Backpack Program reflects
that care. Every fall, over
200 children in our
community are outfitted
with backpacks and the
school supplies they need
to excel.”
He added that
throughout the year, Sue
solicits everything from
haircuts and dental
supplies for local youth,
and goes out of her way to
deliver backpacks to kids
who need them.
A letter nominating Sue
for the award states, “As
one works with Sue, it
becomes evident that she
knows each child, what
they need, and it is
absolutely a wonderful
thing to watch happen. The
children are gifted with a
beautiful smile and total
acceptance – no questions
asked.”
“The things that I do – I
never do it by myself,” Sue
told the banquet audience
as she accepted the award.
“I do it with support from
The Welcome Table, and
United Way, and my family.
I want to say thank you to
everybody for the support
that you give, especially to
the Back to School
program.”
