The Vermillion Area Community Foundation is accepting proposals for projects to improve our community. Forms for submitting proposals by groups or organizations are available at the Chamber of Commerce office. While funds available are limited we can fully fund small one time requests or partially fund larger projects. Your annual donations to our Foundation will provide us with increasing funds each year for worthwhile projects. Announcements: “April Showers Bring May Flowers”: The Main Street Center Nutrition Board has asked the kitchen staff to compile a “wish list” – another attempt to make the Main Street Center noon meal, “Meals on Wheels” and Town Square program survive. We’re asking for your help. It’s an “April Shower” of kitchen/office supplies you may donate to help keep expenses down. Thank you for any donation. Vermillion High School needs your help: The mission of the Vermillion School District is “To empower all students to maximize their success in our global community.” With this in mind, the state is mandating additional offerings for graduation starting in the fall of 2013 to include some sort of Senior Experience. This might take the form of becoming a mentor or providing job shadowing and internship opportunities. . Meals on Wheels needs your help. Vermillion Meals on Wheels, like other towns participating in the nutrition project of Dakota Senior Meals, is struggling to survive. The state and federal government provide approximately 40 percent of the actual cost to prepare each meal. The rest of the cost comes from local sources. You can help make a difference. Make a donation or enjoy a nutritional, “home cooked” meal by the Vermillion Dakota Senior Meals at the Main Street Center. Meals can also be delivered to individuals and couples that are unable to leave their home. To make a donation or for more information, call the Nutrition Kitchen at 6247868. The sixth annual Community-Wide Preschool Screening sponsored by the Vermillion School District and Head Start along with community support for children who are currently ages 3 and 4, but not eligible for kindergarten in the 20132014 school year. Arrrrre you advertising in the Broadcaster? 4 NOTICE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO CONTROL NOXIOUS WEEDS AND DECLARED PESTS NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN this 13h day of March, 2012, pursuant to SDCL 38-22 as amended to all owners, occupants, agents and public officials in charge of lands in Clay County, South Dakota, that they are responsible of the suppression, control, and eradication of noxious weeds and declared pest infestations that may exist on such lands. Chemical, biological, and/or cultural control methods used for the suppression, control and eradication of noxious weed and declared pest infestations shall be those approved for such purposes by the Clay County Weed and Pest Supervisor, County Agricultural Extension Agent or the South Dakota State University Experiment Station. Upon failure to observe this notice, the county weed and pest board is required to proceed pursuant to the law and have the noxious weeds or declared pests destroyed by such methods as they may find necessary, the expense of which shall constitute a lien and be entered as a tax against the land, and be collected as other real estate taxes are collected, or by other means as provided by law. Plant and animals designated as being noxious weeds and declared pests in the state of South Dakota are Leafy Spurge, Salt Cedar, Perennial Sow Thistle, Russian Knapweed, Hoary Cress, Canada Thistle, Purple Loosestrife, Prairie Dogs, and Gypsy Moth. In addition, Musk Thistle and Plumless Thistles have been approved by the State Weed and Pest Control Commission as locally noxious weeds and are subject to the same suppression, control and eradication requirements as the before mentioned plants and animals. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that upon establishing probable cause to believe a noxious weed or declared pest infestation exists upon any property in Clay County, a representative of the Clay County Weed and Pest Control Board will enter upon said property for the purpose of inspecting and confirming that such infestation actually exists.
