USD Music set to host camp July 7-12 By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk. net The second week of July, the University of South Dakota will be home to almost 200 young musicians from the quad-state area. That’s because the USD Department of Music is hosting the 62nd annual USD Summer Music Camp from July 712. “It is a week of intense music-making and study,” said camp director David Holdhusen, Ph.D. Throughout the week, more than 180 students from grades 5-12 will take part in a variety of music instruction and performance opportunities led by members of the USD music faculty and the student body. “We have a full day planned for them,” Holdhusen said. “It started at about 8 every morning and concludes every night with a concert even for the students at 7:30.” In addition to such classes as world drumming, rock and roll history and general musicianship, the students will have a chance to take part in multiple concert ensembles. While many of these activities stay the same year-to-year, the camp organizers always try to add something new. “We have a new chamber choir that we are offering this year. We also changed the schedule this year so that we have more opportunities for the students to participate in sectionals and other courses directly related to their concert performing ensembles,” Holdhusen said. “We didn’t add a whole lot of new classes this year, it was just a rethinking of the schedule and offering more performance opportunities during the day.” The camp will culminate with three special performances: • At 7 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at Aalfs Auditorium, jazz bands show choirs and percussion ensembles will perform • at 11:45 a.m. on Friday, July 12, there will be performances by chamber strings, opera, chamber choir and additional small ensembles • at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at Aalfs Auditorium, concert bands, concert choirs and a string orchestra will perform. There are no set requirements for students to attend the camp, Holdhusen said. “It’s an open camp that we encourage anybody who has an interest in music to attend,” he said. The only real requirement is that the student must fall into the proper age group. “We don’t have any requirement as to how much (training) you’ve had coming in,” Holdhusen said. “We just want you to come and enjoy, and hopefully it will spark an interest for them to look at some other additional things as they go back to their own schools.” Many of the students enjoy the camp so much they come back year after year, he added. Of this year’s attendees, “about 100 of them” have gone at least once, with a handful of them in their sixth year, he said. “When we talk to them about their experiences, they love the opportunity to come and be with people who are as passionate about music as they are,” Holdhusen said. “Sometimes in the schools they are in a class where there are some people who maybe don’t have that same drive and love for music that they do. “But they know when they come here they’re surrounded by people who have that common interest, and it gives them BroadcasterOnline.com “Get Connected!” PRECISION PAINTING A17407 a chance to be more themselves, and experience more musical opportunities that they don’t get at their school,” he said.
